Whenever I get mad at my job and start surfing job websites, the companies always make education seem more important than experience. I don't understand that. Why would they rather have a kid fresh out of college than someone who knows the business but doesn't have a degree?

Education also shows an ability to stick to it and learn

Good experience makes you really good at doing what you have already done. It doesn't make you good at what you haven't done yet. Good education lets you be ok no matter what they give you and then to later become good at what they finally assign to you.

So education may be more attractive when they haven't figured out exactly what they need you to do.

Because experiance does not mean you were successful, only that you are older.
Education at least means that you can be taught.

In many situations, the hiring person, or at least the person you will be working for, wants someone they can teach to do things their way.

Someone who has a lot of experience is already going to have their own thought processes in place on how to handle situations and that may cause conflict with how the employer wants things done.

basically

less experience = less resistance to the employer's business processes

To add to it, someone who is educated has proven they can be taught, so the employer also wants someone they can successfully teach.

For some things education is used in place of experience.
I've seen more then a few listings where a masters is treated like 2 years of experience.

LOL...my fiancee's job just hired a chick with an MBA. Her boss salivates over her because of the MBA. All she does is bitch, wine and complain all day.

It's funny that if you have "too much education", you still won't get the job because then they're afraid that you won't be interested and will always be looking for greener pastors.

I decided I'm going for a second master's just for shits and giggles after I finish my first in 2 months. Wonder how that'll impede my future...

It's a litmus test.

It's a way to weed out from the masses.

In most cases experience DOES matter and often will trump education but to shop the job around to candidates they need to define it within the text of the job description.

From what I've always seen, which it isn't always stated, it's education or equivalent years experience.

"Because they can be taught" is utter bullshit. All that means is, for the most part, had the means to dick around for four years, party, some barely do minimum works just to pass, and get a paper.

The innate learning ability is not something that can be taught.

It's a perverse way for lazy people from HR to "filter" out resumes.

Education is the foundation that experience is built upon. Not everything can be gained from experience because certain jobs expect you to know certain things about the world that serves as the basis for your applied knowledge.
