Seriously that board sucks. There is no oc'ing options on it to begin with and only the cheepoman bios can give it that. Its also very outdated and even a kt266a board will outpreform it. so what if its only 50 bucks? You can easily get a better kt 266 board for 50.

people don't like to think or spend time trying to think
it's simple, available, and cheap

i'm not fond of the board myself but some people just don't care what motherboard they have

FLAME BAIT!!!

heres a tip....DONT BUY IT IF YOU THINK IT SUCKS!!! if you have a brain and know how to properly assemble a system, that board is very nice.

the board isn't so bad. its got everything a non-power user needs. i picked it up with the 2000+ as a combo at Fry's for 99 bucks. sold the board for 50 bucks after using it for a month.

Yeah, I got the $99 deal too. Basically, it's like this, I can't afford to spend more than $30 on a motherboard and you know what? With that motherboard worth about $50 and the CPU for about $90, or more if retail, I saved over $40. Now, I tell you what, it performs well enough for most people and not everyone is so into the whole extreme overclocking and 'Let's see how high I can get my 3DMark scores!' Anyways, yeah.

I agree that now-a-days you can get a better KT266A board or something, but not when I bought my two. And for your information, I have never had any problems with either and I think they're great boards.

I'm not "wasting time with the K7S5A."
I'm biding my time with the K7S5A, awaiting the L7S7A with the SiS 746FX chipset!

It's (K7S5A) running flawlessly at 150/150Mhz. (with cheepoman's bios) and I'm saving $$$ by waiting to upgrade.

I'm happy with the one I picked up for $60 at Fry's B&M (emergency replacement). Works great in my son's PC running a Duron 700. I don't o/c that machine since he and my wife use it and need it to be stable. I just optimize windoze and make sure nothing's baking in the case and leave it alone.

I'm actually pretty impressed since my last SiS experience was horrible... Back in the p100 days had a SiS board that was ripped out of some bastardized propreitary machine. The onboard video sucked, the drivers sucked, the board was unstable as heck running anything more advanced than Win3.1. So I've avoided SiS like the plague till this board.

Not bad at all, and worth the price.

It's cheap.
It works.

99 percent of all computer users don't expect more than this from their computer. All those overclocking bells and whistles just add cost without giving them any value they'd ever care for.

It's cheap all right, although I did get ripped off by my local computer store :disgust: Didnt really have a choice though as they were the ONLY store close to me.

I just got a XP1700+ JIUHB setup with my 'outdated' K7S5A. Threw in some PC2700 and slapped on a cheapo Cooler Master HSF... some speedfan adjustments later and I'm now running at 166 x 11 = 1826 MHz. Not bad for its price range I must say.

Agree with soulkeeper. Even lots of computer store do not have a research spirited mind. When they find a motherboard cheap in where they are comfortable with, they stick with it for a longgggg time. I do not write often, but I read regularely on this site since it's opening. Having 800 computers distributed in Mac and PC since years, Iam as comfortable when I know or when I do not know something. I only need to know fast and how to know fast.
people in general do not have this mind set but appreciate it. Hey!!! we live with them. They dont oc, they change MB/CPU/MEM

I have ahd the one in my fiance's rig for a LONG time, well before the nforce1 or kt266a boards were out. It is fine for her, she doesnt know the difference. However, that being said, I would not buy one right now. I would get the Asus A7N266-VM AA to bhuild a non enthusiast budget board. If you arent a gamer, this board has everyitng including the onbaord video and DD 5.1 for less then $75. That is definately a less then a k7s5a + video card.

why is everyone wasting time with the K7S5A?
Because with the board, it's either hit or miss. Some work, some don't. However, the popularity of the K7S5A started about a year and a half ago. At the time, the board was selling for $69 - and all of the other motherboards were $120+, so this was a bargain board. Because so many were sold, the board had a good following.

Sure, it may not be the best board today - given the competition in the $50 range. However, you have to pay respect to the following of the board which started quite a long time ago. Additionally, not everyone is into overclocking. Overclocking today, isn't nearly the fun that it was 8 years ago when you would buy a Pentium 100 CPU for $500 and push it up to a 133. Today, one can overclock - but you need to utilize benchmarks to actually see the performance.

Alright thanks for the people who didn't flame me out lol. Sometimes when I look at the frys adds I see the athlon 2000+ w/ a k7S5A for 100 dollars. Wouldn't it make more sense to get a kt 333/266a board and a 1700+ t bred b for a similar price? See thats what I don't get. I'm not talking about how it was an exceptional deal one year ago. People are continuing to buy these boards even though there is clearly better alternatives which would be better equiped for the future. Do you guys get me? Sry if I came up rough at first on this thread.

After my last post, I left the computer on all night to download files at 166FSB.

Almost all of the files showed up as corrupt! :Q I know this isnt CPU-related (or is it?) because it's relatively stable at 1836 MHz. I wish there was some way to up the voltage without messing around with my CPU. I'm guessing this corruption has to do with the 166FSB, but since my PCI was running at 33 MHz, I thought it wouldnt cause any problems. I also had trouble installing Splinter Cell at that FSB; after lowering it down 133 it installed.

It's not my RAM, since that's PC2700... any one have any ideas?

Well, you overclocked, you get data corruption, so what's the question? Step back until you have something stable again.

No 1/5 divider or bus lock = data corruption/premature component failure at 166FSB

I used Speedfan and chose the 166FSB setting with 33MHz PCI. Is this not a 1/5 divider?

EDIT: Now running 133FSB/166memory and stable. So I guess it has nothing to do with my RAM. Time to get a new Nforce2 mobo!

you get what you pay for, and there are a few bios makers, notably honeyx and cheepoman, that provide basic OCing. there's a great user base out there and forum to help each other out. I haven't had one problem in over a year with this. it's a great board if you know its limits and its common problems/solutions.

Not only do I respect the Mainboard for it's price/performance... I like the fact that it has limited options so when I sell the Puter to someone I don't have to worry about them messing things up in the BIOS and calling me for input/instructions which on OC boards usually takes me out to their place to jumper the MoBo to default and start over. Another reason is on an upgrade there are only a handful of MoBo's that offer SDRAM or DDRRAM support.

I used one of these mobo's for a 900 Mhz WinME system that I gave to my sister for her first home PC.

Her daughter plays around with "The Sims" a bit - but that's all the "gaming" they do. E-mail, surf, and some letters is its main use, and on that basis, the only thing my P4 2.8 rig does faster is boot up.

It hasn't had a single problem in about 1.5 years . . .
