seems like the g80's are all in the 8800 fam so i dont understand why the g92, being faster than the 8800gts640 is not labled a 9600 or something.

what is the reason behind "8800gt"

and what is the fucking point of only releasing 2000 of them ????? Seriously! Is it so that Nvidia can see how much of them will get bought up, price gouge us, and wait till the 3850 & 3870 get here so they can release the rest of the 8800gts to buy up market share from ati.!!?!?!!?

GOD DAMNIT just give us a good deal. roll out the 9800 gtx ultra black pearls for $100 bucks and throw in the triple sli for the first 50k customers.

they just want to make money, cant blame em though.

i just hope they dont put the card out in a month or two in higher numbers to compete with atis next two launches. and when the performance is obviously better than ati, they jack the price of the thing up.

Why else have a less expensive card than the 640mb gts thats is faster? WTF? THE PRICE IS GOING TO GO UP AND I CANT FIND A SINGLE CARD ANYWHERE god damn AND I HAVE NO MONEY RIGHT NOW shit

They rushed it out so fast they didn't have time? Lol, cross out the "S" in "GTS" and add "SSC"

They are playing on the enormous success of the 8800 series ie. the GTX, GTS and Ultra and probably don't want to spend more money on marketing.

Yes, they did release it ahead of schedule and with limited supply, if only to steal potential customers but more importantly PR buzz from AMD/ATI's simultaneous graphics/CPU/chipset launch. It seems to have worked because now everyone has their eye on getting a G92 this winter instead of whatever ATI would have put out, and now ATI can only compete on price.

Also, why are you so angry..it's just computer hardware..

Because that G92 isn't next gen chip. It's dieshrink of G80 + some HD-video hardware accelration.
Better question is that why did they call it G92 instead of G81 for example?

..but actually Nvidia have renamed G92 and they don't use that naming style for their chips. G92 is now known as D8P = Desktop, eight generation, performance class.

Next generation chip-names:
D9E = GF9 enthusiast class
D9P = GF9 Performance class
D9M = GF9 midrange class

What was the 7900 called (G7x?) compared to the 7800 (G7x?)? Or did it use different codenames?

G70=7800
G71=7900

(there was this Gainward's 7800 GS agp which used G71)
---

Dunno what they will do with for example dieshrink versions? Usin same codename for two different chip ain't sexy

At this point (before the "updated" GTS is released) it seems they should have named the GT the GTR, or something similar, and lowered the prices on the 8800 GTS to the MSRP of the GT. Made the hierarchy look something like... GTS<GTR<GTX<Ultra... woulda saved a lot of confusion, for me at least. Then release the 9xxx XXXs after the newyear. Out of curiosity, has there ever been a GTR anything in the past from nVidia?

Also, this "updated" 8800 GTS they keep talking about... how much better than the GT can it be without surpassing the GTX? So, will there be an updated GTX like they are trying to do with the GTS? They are making it difficult to plan ahead for an upgrade, or is that their intention?

ah okay i understand this, i thought it was the same product line of chips that will roll out in the production of the 9800 series cards.

i'm angry because of the taunting supply of these g92 cards. yeah its just computer hardware.

im mad cuz i didn't buy one like my friends told me to right when it came out, and ill BET that the price rises for the next few months.

why not 9200 or 9400 or 9600?

Companies do not exist to make sense; they exist to make money. When a naming convention is created, sooner or later marketing will figure out that they can subvert the naming conventions for their own purposes. The current theory is that nVidia decided to release some new products to steal ATI's thunder for the HD38x0 series holiday release series. The resulting madness is simply a marketing group trying to make sensible names after the fact.

I'm starting to think they will never be offered at the MSRP. Maybe once the 9xxx series is released.

On an interesting side note, sort of... I was at Fry's yesterday (for non-gpu related reasons) and thought I'd stop by the vid cards to see their display. They had empty spaces on the shelves for eVGA vanilla and BFG OC. I asked the kid working near them (probably my first mistake) when they expected more graphics cards and all I got was a headache. He went into "Oh, are you talking about the 8800 GT? That card is so popular it's the best performance/cost" etc... and went on and on about how great the card was. I was like dude, you really don't need to be trying to convince me to buy a card that you don't even have in stock. When will you get more in? "We only got two brands the first shipment but next time we will get like 5 or 6 different brands" So when do you expect your next shipment? "We get shipments in everyday, but we don't know what is on the truck until it gets here so I don't know, hopefully by Black Friday " Also, I assume that by the 5 or 6 brands he actually meant the flavors for EVGA and BFG, ie: standard, OC, KO, SSC, etc..., since I haven't seen them carry any other brands of vid cards lately.

Why does no one have an ETA for round two? Is it top secret or something. Newegg only has ETA's listed for one or two out of the 9 cards. Most other e-tailers don't have any ETA at all or it says something stupid like Nov 5th, when that was over a week ago. All manufacturers websites are BO. Supply isn't getting any better anytime soon it appears... maybe demand will drop off this week. Hmm, ATI is looking better everyday as long as they have enough cards available for the release of the 3870.

Supply and demand my friend. Once there is more supply, the demand gradually goes down and the price also, then it will all stabilize.

I'm playing the waiting game. I just hope I will have enough cash to upgrade my GTS 320MB to a D9E when finally released.

When was the original scheduled release for the 8800 GT before it was moved up to 10/29?

Who knows?

What we know is:

1. New AMD cards will be released soon.
2. The 8800GT release does not seem to be well-planned (i.e. it may have been rushed).
2.a. Quantities of cards are low.
2.b. The price/performance ratio would have obsoleted most of nVidia's existing mid/high-end products if quantities of cards had been high.
2.c. The core may be a cut-down version of unreleased high-end products.

So people were speculating that nVidia released the 8800GT to make the HD 3870 look like an "also-ran."
