why is it so easy to stay up late yet so hard to wake up early?

Even after going to bed at 12 every night for the past 3 days...I still find it easy to stay up later if I want.
But waking up earlier than my usual time is completely impossible...why is that?

i havent gone to bed at a reasonable time (before 2 or 3) in a really long time... its 3.45 now and i have to be up for class at 9 tomorrow..
waking up is hard no matter what time it is though... waking up at 12 is just as hard as waking up at 8. I never want to get out of bed.

and no matter what time i wake up--- i can never go to bed early... my mental clock is so screwed up from college life

i was talking about this with my mom the other day, and her theory is that it's because during the day, you have to do stuff you don't want to do, but at night, you're free to do anything you want, so naturally, you want to stay awake more. easier to stay awake when you're having fun.

Heh.. it's 2am here now, and I'm at work. I'm tired as hell. However, after 6am, when it's time for me to go home, I'll be wide awake.. go figure.

took me a minute or two...but the word is "reckon"

I don't know why it's easier to stay up. I know that for me, I do not function well before 10 a.m. Since I was a baby, my mom said that I used to stay up till 1 a.m if she would let me. Now, I work swing shift, from 4 p.m to 1 a.m... and I'm never tired at work, like I would be for more than half the day if I worked 9 to 6. I think there's some people who like being nocturnal...

So then following that logic, does that mean that if you got up, say, an hour earlier than you had to, and then played computer games, or did some enjoyable activity before going to work/school... THEN you'd be able to wake up earlier in the morning?

I don't know if that's the case or not. Just a theory.

Shoot, in an attempt to make my sleeping schedule "normal", I've been going to sleep around 10 - 11, or at least trying to. I laid down last night at 11, but couldn't fall asleep. Got out of bed at 12:30, played on the computer for 30 minutes, went back to bed, rolled around for an hour, and finally fell asleep. When 7:30 rolled around, I was not ready to wake up.

I always get my sleep schedule messed up on the weekends, and struggle all week to get readjusted. Then the weekend comes again. Viscous cycle. This week will be even worse with Monday off.

well I figured out a solution to that problem last summer. Get up earlier on Sunday morning. Even if you stay out til 3 AM on Sat. Night...don't wake up later than 9 or 10 AM on Sunday. That way you'll be short on sleep so it'll come easier on Sunday night. You gotta sacrifice sleeping in for one day...but to me its better than trying to get re-adjusted the rest of the week.

It usually took me till Thursday to get re-adjusted in the cycle...but I'd go out on Thursday nights (thirsty thursday!) so it just got messed up right away.

Why?:

Staying up later: b/c we want to.
Getting up early: we don't want to.

that logic doesn't work...cuz there's some days when I want to get up early (like to go skiing) but its still hard.

I use to have the same problem in college, but now that I started working its hard to stay up late AND wake up early.

I'm pretty much that way--a night person. But needing to get up extremely early for classes...and realizing that it just seems more reasonable to go to bed by at least 1 a.m. and get up relatively early...I've kind of changed my habits.

Maybe I'm getting old? *sigh*

Well, I've almost given up completely on a having a regular sleep schedule. There is never a night where I don't have something to do or I can't come up with something to do. I happen to be getting more sleep now since it's the beginning of the semester, but I probably only averaged about 3 to 3.5 hrs. a night per week (mon-fri) last semester. I'm sure you all have had those times, but I've been giving this a lot of thought lately.

i think it's like newton's law...

- a person who is awake tends to stay awake
- a person who is asleep tends to stay asleep

Isn't that Murphy's law?
