Generally, I see it as a short-term trade-off between reliability, some resemblance to the original IBM PC or "selectric" keyboard layout, and the extra features.

Wouldn't have posted here but for my experience today. I've been using a Logitech PS/2 keyboard that I'd always regarded as "mid-range" for features and expense. It's starting to get worn down: the key-switches are still good, but my space-bar is showing a smooth depression from 10 years under my thumbs. And it was dirty. I'm tweaking my KVM and monitor setup right now -- integrating new and old parts.

Went by a computer shop today near the university; casually asked what they had -- that I was partial to Logitech. I found a new one similar to the old -- silver and black color scheme, similar features. $15. 15 bucks.

And now I'm thinking that the old was the cause of flakey behavior with my KVM setup. I'm not seeing any flakey behavior with the new one. Now I'm thinking I should hit the port on the KVM and the plug on the old keyboard with some "electronic cleaner," such as you might use for the gold fingers on your RAM modules.

"KVM" is part of a strategy, and with the strategy, there are different priorities and compromises made. But not much of a compromise for $15.

Maybe when I feel inclined, I'll try one of those blue-light-ergonomic USB jobs. I can work with it either way . . . .

I can find nice keyboards to my liking so I ended up going for something cheap, backlit and with membrane keys. Hugh. But it works.

My problem is that I'm used to the Portuguese (European) layout, and the US layout has a weird enter key. This is my layout:

See that big enter key? It's brilliant! Because it's big I never miss it, ever, and because it's bigger at the top, I end up aiming there. Which means US layouts have, to me, the enter key in the wrong place.

I don't need to look at my keys to know where they are, so I'm ok with blank keyboards, but all blank keyboards I've seen have the enter key of the US layout.

Can anybody help me in my search for an Cherry MX Blue mechanical keyboard?

I understand your liking what you are used to. But where is the forward slash key (/)? I see two backslashes. (\).
The / is only available at the numpad, which would be a pain for coding if I weren't used to it since forever.

The \ is only available at the top left-most key on the keyboard, the tilde key on the US keyboard. The lower \ in the picture doesn't exist. I don't know why it's there in the picture.

You have a tilde key where the Enter key should be. No wonder you guys learn to hit the top of a double-height Enter key.

Junk keyboards here often have a double-height Enter key. When they do, ours still have a wider bottom half. Tall Enter keys on US keyboards drive me absolutely insane. The tall Enter key displaces the [\], which could end up in any of 3 different places. It almost always means your Backspace key gets cut to half-width, which is infuriating.

I might have jumped on board years ago with the Microsoft "ergonomic" designs. And I would guess the key layout had still followed the old selectric design. But that was my original point about it. I like things to be where I'd always expected them to be -- going back to the AT-plug and layout of my old PC transportable keyboard -- or any IBM-style keyboard of that era.

A person and his/her fingers get used to certain things.

Ahaha! That too!

There are some keyboards over here that are like that, with a single-width backspace, and I do agree that it's the SINGLE worst thing in the entire world. And as someone who uses tildes often in words, it's doubly problematic.

I had one of such keyboards in my house and I had the pleasure of destroying it with a sledge hammer.

No kidding.

Here's a Filco with cherry MX blues and ISO layout:

http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard/uk-filco-ninja-majestouch-2-nkr-click-action-keyboard.asp

It has the "ninja" style keycaps where the legends are on the front of the keycaps instead of the top.
