Why is it so hard to get pictures from laptop to computer?

I used my sister's laptop to store photos while we were on vacation so I have about 300 pictures of DC and NY on her hard drive. Now the easy part I thought would be to use a crossover cable to link her computer to mine. Unfortunately my crossover cable's bad or I'm doing something wrong (NIC lights don't turn on when I plug it from one computer to the other). I tried using my router, and that thing doesn't work either (plugged cable to WAN port, plugged mine to port 1, and hers to port 2, got an ip, but no DNS so no internet, tried accessing the router from IE, doesn't work, so router's probably busted, reset doesn't work either). She uses Windows ME and I use XP, but I was sure I've done it before, but I know ME can't automatically detect new connections very well. I don't know I sent the files to a buddy over AIM and now he can't send it back. I'm kind of asking for help, but I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong just everything's going wrong.

first of all, if there are no link lights when you connect your crossover cable directly to the two machines, either:

1) its not really a crossover cable
2) its a bad crossover cable
3) one of the nics is bad

another thing to keep in mind, is that when you plug them into the router, XP handles it fine, and automatically gets an IP.

but with ME, and 98, and 95, you may have to go to 'start', 'run' and type in 'winipcfg', and select your network adapter, and hit 'renew' to get an ip.

either way, make sure you have the workgroup name the same on both machines, and file and printer sharing enabled on the machine with the pictures, and share the directory they are in. (xp sometimes can see other workgroups, but it doesnt hurt to set it)

well if the nics arent showing any lights, i think its safe to assume that the problem is with them.

so fix them

make sure they work ,get thte drivers etc.

no...as mentioned it could be the cable. the cards only light up if there is a connection...thus is the cable is not crossed or its bad, then they wont light up.
