we get downward spiraling stock markets and consumer confidence tanks? I asked this after reading this and I'm reminded this exact scenerio played out under Reagan.

This has got to be bad news for some of our members here.

It's an interesting but anecdotal observation... the markets didn't exactly explode after the election of quite a few Democrats either - I don't remember the Jimmy Carter years being particularly great either for example....

Considering the election was in November and not decided until mid December, the market began its drop into the dumper back in March 2000, I see little correlation between the election and the current state of affairs. The Carter days were an idyllic time of double digit inflation and "national malaise" according to St Jimmy himself.

It's because the party is over. That was the economic and political atmosphere in the country for the Nineties. Tons of sh!t went down in the 90's, and even the bad stuff, (OJ, Bosnia, Clinton...), added to the festive aura. It was like everyone was winking at you all the time, fair foul and vice versa. It was a land without consequences.

Electing George W, was like admitting that it's time to go to the dentist.

That's about the most screwed up opinion.......but one I'm not suprised to hear! Staunch liberals such as TS are always going to try and blame the Reps. for anything......even if it's totaly unwarrented and untrue such as this! Bush had about as much control over this downward trend in the Stck Market as Clinton had over "lil' willy"!

Why is it the Democrats/Liberals keep messing up the house, leaving it for the Republicans/Conservatives to clean up.... ie Jimmy Carter / Bill Clinton...

<< I thought Bush took office in January 2001 not March 2000.

Stupid me.
>>

Convenient fact the Bush bashers like to ignore. They also ignore the long period of growth during the Reagan years and the fact that the economy was already pulling out of the recession before Clinton was elected in 1992. That is not to deny Clinton whatever credit he is due for not doing anything to change that course although some would argue it was because there was virtual gridlock in Washington from 1994 going forward that saved Clinton from his own worst instincts.

With all due respect,I do remember high interest rates ubder Reagan and in the first 100 days of Bush, interest rates have gone down. But even that doesn't dispell the trend I have seen when the country elects conservatives to office. The corporate lay offs this go around is parallel to that of 1980 and through the Reagan years. It was very painful for many members here and thier parents who tried to raise a family at the time.

I hate to see a repeat. :|

While it is easy to place blame, but the problems with the economy start long before Bush ever got to the office.

BTW, war is NOT good for the economy.

That's easy... "he was in the right place, at the right time". Even blind squirrels can find nuts, on occassion. In fact, Bill was able to find his on just about any occasion.
