Yeh. I french press on the weekends and Keurig it on the weekdays. Part of that is because my burr grinder can be heard in any part of the house. I really don't want to wake the kids up at 5:30 to the sound of WIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

I disagree. I like the K-cup black green mountain/cariboo and I know starbucks very horrible IMO.

Most coffee made at home is average at best and the k-cups are better than most/not all. I have had good coffee at other places...it is just few and far between rather than normal.

Good point. I use one of those when I'm traveling. Perhaps you should consider a French Press to complement your thermos. Even if you are brewing Folgers, you will get better tasting coffee than you would with an automatic drip machine or a percolator. Its cheaper to use one too as you don't have to buy the filters...

Tried a french press. All it does is give me a cup of coffee that's full of grounds.

That, and a french press means I need to get out a second appliance to heat the water first, then use the press, then wash the press, then dry out whatever I used to heat the water... The french press takes longer overall than my good ol' Krups drip machine because all I have to do with the Krups is pour the water in, drop the filter in, then, when it's done, pitch the filter and rinse the carafe.

It's as I said, I'm not really the gourmet coffee target market.

If I were going for it, I'd get a nice burr grinder and a vacuum coffee maker but the quality increase just isn't worth the extra hassle. I just want the caffeine and with my heartburn I have to throw so much milk in as a buffer anyway that I might as well just go for cheap and easy.

Btw, you do know that you can use your own coffee right? They have a reusable container for that.

ZV: Maybe you already knew this but you can't use coffee ground for a drip machine (Folgers) and expect it to work well. The grind for a FP is much coarser. Yes, you still get some "dust" but its not as you describe. For my drip machine I typically go for an espresso or Turkish grind. I find I get better flavor that way.

Agreed. I understand why they're used and I would like one as well, but for anything more than a small cup I find it watery as well. If I make coffee it's for one big travel mug... those cups don't cut it. If the new ones are better in this regard I'll be more than happy to get one. I don't drink that much coffee so the convenience > cost for me.

I agree they are for the most part if you drink alot of coffee and only use the k cups.
I usually have my coffee from a drip machine or use my own grounds in the Keurig.

I used my own grind. The problem for me is that the edges never seem to seal properly with a french press. And I tend to be picky about textures anyway.

That did drive me batshit when my wife would do that. I didn't even think about that benefit until now.

And I don't have to take an extra 15 minutes to go out of the way to hit a drive through/counter for it.

It's not as cheap as brewing your own from beans, but it's still less than a 1/3rd of the price of hitting DD or Starbucks.

And if you're lucky enough to be able to buy through an office supply company (company owner FTW), you can get the boxes of 24 k-cups for $8-10 on sale ($0.33 - $0.42 per cup).

The small sizes do suck sometimes though.

How long does it take for you to make an espresso? What about a latte?

It takes me 15 seconds to make an espresso, and about 2 minutes to make a latte.

if you live in a household with 4 coffee drinkers who all drink multiple cups every day... yeah, a Keurig is probably not the option for you.

but they're perfect for someone like me who only drinks 2-3 cups/week (at home, at least; I only drink coffee at home on my days off). when I owned a traditional coffee maker, the beans tended to go stale faster than I could use them.

But even at $2/wk, and ignoring the cost of the machine, you could drink any coffee you want for less money, and just throw it away when it gets stale. You can get some awfully good coffee for $10-15/lb.

Also, I've never found freezing helps coffee at all - mine stays good 2-3 months just sitting (sealed) on the counter. I have always liked my coffee black, so I'm fairly sensitive to bad taste as there's nothing to mask it.

Single-dose coffee is convenient, and I could see someone who doesn't drink coffee at all having one for company, which saves all the trouble of actually knowing how to use your preferred coffee-maker. A single-cup drip machine with a reusable filter will make coffee at least as well as k-cups, in almost the same time, costs $20 and uses 'free' coffee. Use a paper filter in it, and the coffee will be much better than k-cups. And that's the worst of the other choices, in terms of quality of your end product.

Anyone is free to use whatever they want, but it's nearly inconceivable that k-cups could save money.

There's really nothing new about this - Gillette figured out the business model something over 100 years ago. Sell a fast and easy to use but somewhat inferior product for a bit more, and change up the base system every other decade or so. The combination of "easy" and "good enough" tends to make a lot of money.

Of course, I stick to safety razors and pressed coffee, so what do I know?

I love coffee, especially a good dark brew, but I drink folgers black silk daily, because well, I can't justify spending 5+ bucks a day to drink coffee.

switching to an aero press soon when my wife has to stop drinking coffee, and will probably buy a burr grinder to go with it and start getting real beans again in bulk.

THIS I think they expire in about 2 years,. They actually have a handful of patents that expire over time. Some are for the cup form factor. Others for the machines they sell.
