why is my cable connection slow when i am ftp to other cable users???

I was just wondering why is my cable connection is slow when i connect to other cable users.

Example:
I run a ftp site on my pc.
I go to my girlfriends house and transfer files from my my house to hers or vice-verse. Or from my work to my home.
The max speed that i can get is around 35k/s.

Is this normal?

When download stuff from the net/annyomous ftp sites i get normal cable modem speeds, anywhere from 50k/s to 220k/s.

I just through that if both people (client and server) was both on a cable connection that the transfer rate would be higher than 35k/s.

Im useing At&t broadband.

Cable (just like most asynchronous signals) does not PUSH data as much as it PULLS. Therefore when you (clinet) connect to a friends FTP server (server) they are having to PUSH data to your pc. They are usually around 128Kbps (kilo-BITS) which means you should expect to receive about 80% of that downloading. It seems to me that if you are getting ~ 35KB's from your FTP server then you are allowed a 384Kbps upload speed. WHICH IS VERY GOOD for cable!!

I.e. THEORITICAL DOWNLOAD FOR YOU: 1024Kbps Download MAX. == [1024 / 8 bits (8bits in a BYTE)] ==> 128 KBps (kilo-BYTES)

While his upload to you is MAXED @ 128Kbps == [128 / 8 bits] ==> 16KB.

So for you: (384/8)*80% ~ 38KB which you are getting a little less. The speed that you are getting from other FTP's sites obviously aren't hosted via a home user's cable modem!
