Why is my E6300 running so hot?

Put system together, started it up, and it's showing 80 degrees celcius. I shut her down fast, because I figured that's way too hot. This is my first build, so I don't know why it's so hot.

Do I need an aftermarket thermal paste? Is the stuff that came on the HSF good enough if I'm not overclocking?

It's bundled because it sufficiently does the job.

Are you sure it's installed right? Could be an innacurate reading, too.

80 C is way too hot. Make sure the heatsink is seated fine on the chip.

No, you dont need an aftermarket cooler if you arent going to overclock. Your temps should be around ~40 C

I'm pretty sure it's installed right. As soon as I started it up and went into the BIOS, it was going between 79 and 80 degrees celcius. I'll check it to make sure it's in right.

Thanks for responding!

What motherboard are you using? 80c is definatly way way way too high. Even my 8xx series pentium-d's didn't hit 80c on the stock heatsink. Either the heatsink isn't seated correctly, or the readings are wrong. Turn in on, open the case, and touch the heatsink near the base, if the heatsink feels cool to the touch, and the temps are accurate, then it's not making good contact.

I hope the readings are wrong, because this thing is reading 80c right when I start it up. Can it get that high right on startup?

As I said in your GH post it sounds like the sink isn't seated right or you forgot to pull off the plastic from the bottom.

likely a misreading for some reason...

You should be fine unless it shuts down randomly. Either way your conroe shouldn't be damaged by heat. See what speedfan says. Then check cpuz or whatever to see if there's throttling going on.

He said in GH that he used the TIM that was on the sink, I've seen some that have a clear plastic sheet over it for protection & it has to be removed before installing.

simple little problems are usually the culprit when this sort of stuf happens. so probably a bad temp reading or an improper installation.
previous poster is also right that you should make sure you got the thermal paste onto the processor with nothing inbetween (ie no clear plastic sheets).

also, if you do take the HS/F OFF the processor, you will need to get some isopropyl alcohol wipes, and clean off both HS/F and processor before reinstalling the heatsink (with new thermal compount). If you just take the HS/F off and then slap in back on, you will trap a layer of air inside the thermal paste, which means poor heat transfer which means high temps...

Any time you install a new 'generation' (i.e., core,) of µprocessor you should update the BIOS on your motherboard (provided an update is available.)

Oh, thanks. Although I have never seen this on an Intel retail heatsink. Do retail AMD sinks have this?

AMD heatsinks generally use plastic trays that come up around the sides of the heatsink, with a raise portion in the center where the thermal paste is.

The HSF wasn't installed right. Installing that thing was the hardest part of the install for me. Now it says it's running in the mid 40's. Probably still a little hot, eh?

I'm finally installing windows. Thanks for the help. Sorry I posted on two boards, I was freaking out...hehe.

Mid 40's is nothing. Body temp is only 37.
