Why is my refresh rate only 60 hertz during games?

I have noticed that my monitor displays my desktop at a refresh rate of 85 hertz, but when I get into a game it goes down to 60 hertz. I am using a 9500 pro. Is there any way I can get a better refresh rate during games?

What's your OS? I've heard of this happening in XP a lot.

Im using Win XP. Does that mean I cant do anything about it?

Display Properties>Advanced>Displays>click on your monitor>DirectX ovveride refresh rate, Enter the refresh rate you want your games to run at.

powerstrip program to force refresh. nvidia drivers can do it. ati can't

forgot to mention, refresh force is not a program that you have to load and run all the time, run it once and job done.

The RRO has been an option for ages (years?) in both DirectX Properties (cpl) and Diagnostic Tool (Run -> dxdiag -> More Help tab). ATI added this option to a third place in their Control Panel (Displays tab -> Monitor) some time last year. Since February it has also functioned as an OpenGL RRO although the label refers only to DirectX. So, if you run a Radeon, no external programs are requir'd.
