I was stationed in Germany for 4 years and traveled to nearly every european country. we had no kids and i worked a 6 days on 3 days off rotation and on my 3 days off my wife and I were in our car going someplace new. so ya i have been around, no nudity is not the norm, its accepted yes but it is not the norm. not all beaches are nude and not all beaches are topless. I am fully aware how prudish the US is.

There's a definite difference in attitude though, what would happen if a woman went topless in the US compared to, say, the South of France? (assuming both on a standard public beach)

After a few scandals (e.g. Fatty Arbuckle),

they basically hired some religious folks following public outcry over Hollywood immorality (from I suppose the same groups that got prohibition enacted). They even censored Betty Boop.

You can read the origin and early implementation here.

One of the movies that got caught in the maelstrom was Hedy Lamarr's Ecstasy in 1933.

perhaps the first non-pornographic movie to portray sexual intercourse

A US thing? US laws are less restrictive then most of the world except for a few European countries.

Name some good skin flicks from the largest countries in the world China, India, or Indonesia? How about the middle east countries? Africa?

comparing our level of progress [in any issue] to that of 2nd and 3rd world countries does not a strong argument make.

I already pointed it out to you guys in my first post--if the link were followed, would answer every god damn question in this thread

An organization is not a person. People generally like nudity in movies. It's when they try to be part of an organization (or a religion) that their public opinion seems to change, but they're really just stating the stance of the organization.

A close friend and devout Muslim commented to me that Muslim women should wear the hijab because not doing so makes it hard for men to concentrate while praying. My counter was that seeing a woman's hair/neck is not distracting to me because I have spent my entire life seeing women's face and neck. It's the same thing with nudity. Because nudity is seen by us as special or unusual, it creates a strong reaction. If we walked around every day without clothes, no one would sexualize nudity as an ends to itself.

There's a shitload of places in the US where women are legally allowed to go topless. There are a large number of popular spring break beach destinations where toplessness is very, very common. Hell, my city has a naked bike ride every year through downtown. Sure, there are plenty of places in rural America where female toplessness is seen as obscene (it tends to be in the same places where male toplessness is encouraged and pants aren't available with a waist size under 48, so figure that one out). But you can't compare a small section of France to the entirety of the US and call it fair.

the point is that the MPAA are the ~dozen or so people who actually don't like nudity in movies, and it is only their opinion, unfortunately, that matters in the end. Of course, they receive a lot of infulence from traditionally hypocritically-named organizations like "Focus on the Family" and other bullshit orgs that are simply shell groups for organized bigotry and the installation of a theocratic government, but it is the opinion of the MPAA that ultimately matters.

They use ideas like "family values" to justify their hatred of sex and nudity and their relative indifference to ultra violence. Of course, these very same people are often childless and single individuals, who would know nothing about raising kids.

it's a crock of shit.

The MPAA and all the other self righteous asswipes out there who have to posture for what they determine is proper "morality" are the main problem. It's no wonder most Europe laughs at us and our half-assed puritan self hatred. Sad.

Clearly, you didn't get the point I am trying to make.

I get your point, but my question is what movies would be made better with more nudity? And let's discount the teen angst/growing up/ignorant movies that have little to no plot other than showing skin.

Would any of the Lord of the Rings movies have been dramatically better with a lot of nudity? Etc., etc., etc.

You can have as much nudity in your movie as you want. It just it gets rated NC-17 or whatever and no theaters carry it and you don't make oodles of money. Er, or maybe you do.
