Its really all about protecting their innocence until they have accumulated enough perspective, pyschological and emotional maturity, that when they enounter potentially corrupting influences they can make better judgements about them.
I often wonder if we know more then than we do now, and are taught that things aren't the way they really are as we get older (in the last two years I've found through my parents things that I said and did that I just recently thought I'd discovered, a couple of which have really freaked me out).Of course they will encounter all those things 'sooner or later', and that's precisely the point. In most cases, its better later than sooner, but in very few cases could it be said that sooner is better than later.
Never before have so many corrupting influences been brought to bear unfettered on so many young and impressionable minds in the history of civilization. Children are not just "little adults".
...and that's what I've seen, more often than not, here in the buckle of the bible belt. They have a distinctly different psychology which can permanently be warped or colored if exposed to many influences during critical stages of their development.
Yes, its about protecting their innocence and that is nothing but a good thing in today's society. That isn't to say you should freak out about them seeing a breast or refuse to discuss things of an adult nature with them. That would be going to the other [bad] extreme.
ABCDEF is bad. Why? Well, because it is!
