Why is nudity/pr0n/sex related things illegal for people under 18?

I mean, why can't a 15 year old go see a pr0n0 or a 16 year old watch american pie in a theater w/o a guardian present.

Will sex/nudity encourage sex/nudity in the person that watches it? Or will the person that watches it go out and rape or kill someone?

And why shield our kids? They probably already know what "69" and "gay" means in the 4th grade.

How many 16 year olds DON'T want porn? How many parents want their 16 year olds to be able to purchase porn?

Because they somehow needed to standardize/objectify the age at which people are considered mature enough to handle most decisions for themselves, and 18 was deemed to be it. In all honesty, I'd say it's actually a fairly decent estimate for most people.

I've often wondered that myself...but I do believe that parents should be able to control many things about their children's lives up to a point, pornography/nudity being one of them. If the parent doesn't think porn is that bad, then he/she can let the child see it earlier.

In all honesty though, I would think that exposure to pornography at too young an age would have an impact on a person's outlook. I believe it's been shown to cause people (men especially) to objectify members of the opposite sex. And once dehumanization takes place, even if only to a small degree, violent sexual crimes are more likely to occur.

This is all very culture bound though: In the US people freak out when they see titties in TV ads at 2PM during popular chat shows, but that is precisely what we get here in Germany (a softporn film is available at 11:45 on saturdays if interest goes further - all on free to view cable TV), on the other hand action blockbusters or other movies that just may have a hint of violence are strongly edited, even if they are shown at 11PM at night. Oh and bad language is kinda funny, every 5 year old here knows "Scheisse" and its proper use

Yes, welcome to the United States, where violence on tv is acceptable and encouraged, where often gruesome crimes are played out in excruciating detail (i.e. CSI), but heaven forbid anyone show a nipple or say a bad word..
