kidding me, ain't paying that much for a puzzle game unless it's a vastly different game they made.

Because suckers will pay it. This is one of those time people should speak with their wallets, but they won't.

wtf... that kind of comment is best reserved for Call of Crap games or something. Portal is an amazing franchise that deserves sales support.

Love it when people make an incredulous post on a forum without doing a quick Google that would have answered their question.

Single player portion of Portal 2 will be four times as long as Portal 1. And they're adding MP as well. Read a couple interviews and you'll have all the info you need. If you still think it's too much, then you're not a Portal fan and you should probably just not buy it. Novel idea, I know.

The 1st one was great, but 1 great game does not = an amazing franchise. At $45 I'll be waiting for it to hit a 70% Steam sale, unless it gets uber great reviews. I liked the 1st one but I honestly wouldn't have paid anywhere close to $45 for it.

I played the first one for quite a while.

It had a lot of neat challenges in it, and it was an amazing original game title. Hell if I would have known the entertainment I would have gotten from it I probably would have paid 40 bucks for it easily.

If the second one has coop (it does) and has more ingenious puzzles and fun times. I will easily pay 45 dollars for it.

Any of you that are complaining about that need to understand that not every game can be a ridiculous value like MW1 was (i played for well over 1k hours) but at the same time too many games are like MW1 was. Portal is one of the few original shooteresque titles around. Support it or everything will be a clone of MW forever.

Agreed. I'm not crapping on Portal. I liked it. I just think jumping to the $50 range is kind of a crap move for a puzzle game..but I guess we'll see what it turns out to be.

Why do you say that? Valve is expanding its platforms but I don't hear much about them abandoning the PC anytime soon.

Valve aren't abandoning PC, shortylickens is just a retard/troll. Valve have always supported PC heavily, even while other developers shunned the platform. And why wouldn't they - Valve have made massive money from the stunningly successful implementation of Steam over the last few years.

The game it great.

The game is not high-priced great, at least, not when one also considers the games that will release around the same time.

Thus, I must vote with my wallet. If it was cheaper, I'd buy it as well.

But for now, I've got Killzone 3 to get, and then Need for Speed Shift2 (PC), Portal is just going to get the shaft due to its pricing at it's time of release.

A few months down the road, or in the fall, basically as soon as there is a Steam Sale for Portal 2, I'm buying it. I support the devs and the game itself, but at a more reasonable price.

Going to take a wild guess here.....

Game was most likely given a budget to expand on what made the first so popular. In effect they want to recoup those monies so they are charging $45. Maybe make some money too because companies like to do that. I know that $45 is unheard for a new a game, but hey what can you do?

I know it's the internets but can you feel my sarcasm. If you have a problem paying full price for something wait for the Steam sale. Problem=solved.

portal aint my cupotea
that said, people were yammerin about l4d2, and that was a day 1 purchase for me @44.95(10%off preorder)
it was everything valve promised itd be and much more than a simp-le expansion
ive got 100s of hours of playtime out of the 2nd, more than the 1st.
in short im guessing if valve is charging full price(if 44.95 is even full price these days)
they think the content justifies it

just playing devil's advocate here, but how many other companies who became wildly successful on PC have abandoned it for consoles?

How many others have created wildly successful and lucrative digital distribution models? That's a whole different nut than switching from developing PC games to console games, which is what you are saying I think.

It's $45 because it's 4x as long, and has an entire co-op campaign. So basically you are getting 8x the gameplay for 3x the price. When you think of it that way it doesn't really seem like a bad deal.

I saw an interview on Gamespot where they stated the game would be 3-4x as long plus a full co-op campaign. Sorry can't confirm with a link right now. Of course we can't really say for sure until the game is actually released anyway.

The co-op is what I'am looking at - I think it would be nice for my daughter or son and I to play though a game of portal.

But at $45,,,, I just dont know about that price. Even if I bought portal 2, its only going to get played for a few weeks, and then duke nukem forever is being released.

Portal 2 - April
Duke Nukem Forever - May

I might just wait until the price comes down a little bit on portal 2.

Its being released on PS3 for 60 bucks. And that will be the last time we see a portal game for windows.

Valve was founded on PC games, PS3 is just a secondary market.

Since the co-op is supposed to be the big thing about Portal 2, I wouldn't be surprised if Valve offered a big permanent discount on a 2-pack. Maybe even starting from launch.

And like gheris said, the sales will come. Those with lots of money and/or needing a game right now pay more immediately, cheapskates and those who aren't hurting for something to play pay less later. Free market at work, nothing to see here.

I think the Orange Box was the best combo deal i ever got. In the end it paid for itself in play time over and over.

I would argue The Orange Box is the best combo deal ever made as of date.

Agreed. Part of what made Portal special is that it was practically given away with the Orange Box, giving it great value. And while I definitely will get Portal 2 eventually, at $45 it's not sounding so sweet. I'll wait for the Steam sale.

Stop crying about $45. You will get more than enough gameplay to make it a good deal.

Yeah, I'm not sure what people were expecting. It's always been known that Portal 2 was going to be a full game and likely carry the full game price tag. It wasn't going to be like the original which was thrown together quickly and tacked onto another release.

And as others have mentioned, if you really hate the idea of paying $45 for it, I'm sure within a couple months it will be on sale for $20-30.

This. I have it preordered... Honestly thought this thread would be praising Valve for how cheap this game is compared to many other recent releases. The direction of this thread boggles my mind.
