From what I hear there's a separate single player and co-op game, and each one is supposed to be twice as long as the original. When you play co-op you're playing a different game than when you played solo.

Valve was founded on PC games, PS3 is just a secondary market.
MOST of the companies founded on PC games have since shifted or sold out to the console club. Easier money. They have lower standards and piss away cash with less resistance.

I'll admit it - when I hear that someone didn't like Portal I automatically assume that when they were playing it they were all like, "WTF IS THIS CRAP? WHERE R GUNZ AND BOOBZ?"

But who knows, maybe I'm the minority. I loved Portal so much, and it would have been well worth $45 to me. If this game is much longer then it's a no-brainer purchase for me as well.

Valve is quite a bit different than other companies. If they stop producing games for PC they will be shooting themselves in the foot. After all how do you think it would if Valve stopped releasing games for their own platform (Steam)? It would basically be the same as Microsoft only developing MS Office for Mac and discontinuing support for Windows.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the game. It was a great puzzle game with a hilarious story/plot.

I can only hope that Portal 2 will be more puzzles (and more complicated/new elements), more hilarity, and overall just more awesomeness.

But, it's not a must-buy at launch, not at $45. If it was the only game released at the time, it probably would be a day-one buy. But I've got other games I want that release within a month of Portal 2. I'm not too worried because I know there will be Steam Sales during summer or toward the end of summer.

Is the game that deep to cost that much? I don't remember Portal 1 costing that much...could be wrong though.

Because it's a full fledged game this time, 8+ hours of play time w/ online coop. The first one was at best a 3-4 hour experience.

Longer development time w/ more people working on it is going to equal a higher price tag. No big shocker there.

Portal was an amazing title, as all Valve games are, I have no problem ponying up $45 for this.

But I'll be buying the PS3 version for $60, since it'll come w/ a free PC copy as well through the Steam account tie-in.

I just bought the 2pack for 20% off, seems like a decent price for this game to me.

From the previews for this game, it seems like $45 is a fair price. Especially since I thought the first one was brilliant and now they are adding co-op and new gameplay elements.

One thing I wont be doing though is purchasing a game that I can't play for another two months. Steam can't borrow my $45 for eight weeks!

Well it looks like MSRP is $50 and the incentive to preorder is that you get $5 off. Price will probably go back up as it gets closer to the release date.

Oh?

:hmm:

In general, anything FPS, or at least FPS-esque, I prefer on the PC if the game is available on PC. I love the Killzone series, but that's PS3 exclusive... in general, I have no problem playing that title. I'm better and more comfortable with m&kb though...

But seriously, that has me wondering. I'm looking forward to seeing what Valve is going to do with Steam on PS3, because Sony basically said "hey, sweet idea, go for it!" They may have, at first, said it was a terrible idea, but they came around to Valve's vision regardless, whereas Microsoft never caved with Live.
If it pans out to be a great product or terrible (Steam features on PS3), remains to be seen. If they are handling the actual coding for the PS3, it might at least mean an efficient port of the PC game (unlike the last go-around)... and Valve has a fairly high standard for what they actually commit to, and have set a high bar for what they accomplish when they set out with a goal.

Love it when people make an incredulous post on a forum without doing a quick Google that would have answered their question.

Single player portion of Portal 2 will be four times as long as Portal 1. And they're adding MP as well. Read a couple interviews and you'll have all the info you need. If you still think it's too much, then you're not a Portal fan and you should probably just not buy it. Novel idea, I know.
how about a link because what I've read said twice as long...

I think you missed the first part of my post where I basically say lazy people that can't Google their own shit are rather annoying, but whatever, here you go:

If they tried stretching out the original 8-12 hours (which is still a really low amount of play time even if it is standard now) the game would suck. For a 3 hour game it was awesome, but there wasn't enough meat in the game play to stretch it out. Hopefully, they added a lot more gameplay mechanics to the game to keep it fresh through the whole thing.

I know they added portal paint at least. Tag: The Power of Paint was a great game and now those guys are working for Valve on Portal 2.

I bought the 2-pack and gifted it to one of my friends :awe:

If the teaser videos they've released are any indication, I wouldn't worry about this. Maybe not 12 hours worth, but certainly quite a bit more variety than the first game had.

Sorry, but holy shit guys, there's a lot of fail in this thread.

Portal 1 = Short, cheap add-on to The Orange Box.

Portal 2 = Full-blown feature-length game.

Please, stop complaining, and stop saying "$45 is too much, I would never pay that much for Portal 1" because that's faulty logic. They're different games. And frankly, $45 isn't too damn bad considering most big publishers are jacking up the price to $60 on PC games now. Valve is awesome for still releasing games for under $50. Still think it's too expensive? Then goddamn, just don't buy it.

Word is that if you buy the PS3 version, you get a key activation for the PC version of the game as well, and you are able to crossplatform coop between a PC and the PS3.

There's no "fail" in voting with your wallet. I think Portal 2 is going to be a fantastic game, however I simply don't think it's worth $45, and Valve is not desperately in need of money - far from it actually - and so I will be buying the game when the price goes down a little.

Why are you blowing a fuse just because some people have a different opinion on how much a game is worth? Just because it's better than the other crap that gets released at that price doesn't mean it isn't overpriced (IMHO) itself.
