What you are proposing has nothing to do with privacy. That is public information, free for the taking for anyone with the time or gadgetry to collect it. The harm in what you are proposing is the imposition of the workload of tabulating and publishing the data.

Privacy is important to the functioning of society because society is built on lies. It is impossible to preserve our facades of normality without preserving the ability to lie to each other about everything we believe, say, and do. If people had to openly admit who they really are, it would spark an apocalypse of imploding egos.

edit: Now as to the legal functions of privacy... well that's another matter altogether!

Hehe, The only egos that will implode in the face of truth are those of those who tell it and if they know the truth to tell they won't have much in the way of ego anyway. So it makes me wonder if Jesus tells the truth every time He comes or just on those occasions where he wants to show us how we deal with the truth.

Those with facades are pretty much bulletproof to anything.

So really, folk pretend to be normal because it has survival value; folk who claim to be normal will kill you if you're not. And why wouldn't they. You would be asking them to risk death by being abnormal. Abnormal is evil, hehe.

Of course there is what one person calls truth, say that Mrs. Henderson is fat, and what another person calls truth, that everybody is perfect and there is only love.

Imagine a world in which everything you see hear or do is recorded along with your location and the data is preserved and maintained off off site. Now suppose you are a victim of a crime. If the your data and the data of all at that site could be opened to a criminal investigation by court order, the truth of what happened to you could be known. If the data could be protected by law and were safe from manipulation it seems to me it would pretty much be the end of crime. The question is would anybody want to live in such a world.

This has ties with why fiat currency runs a portion of our country.

If everything went onto an electronic credit system, your proof or purchases or what you bought is always going to be visible to someone. Like minority report style. This is probably going to become the future, no doubt at all. Whether or not it will occur during our time is a different story.

For one example, say you buy some products for cheap in Europe and resell back in the states for high. The IRS will catch on with your business and you can't use the flexibility in earning money any longer; people will have electronic records of what you do.

Using paper money, it's harder to trace and most of all guarantees privacy, even if the business isn't illegal.

With that being said, that's one of the reasons why privacy still exists.
