STD spread is a problem though.

Again, STD transmission is NIL in legal and regulated brothels.

That's a non-starter.

I don't know how it would be setup in America, but in Amsterdam, the girls run their own "booths", and although they're licenced and must be card carrying by the state, they are checked IIRC only monthy for STDS. That gives you a potential of 30 days to get something, if you're silly enough to bang a prostitute without a condom.

I like the idea of a brothel much better than the red light strips of europe. I wouldn't patron either, but you know..

You could pose this same arguement for drugs.

At least in the US brothels that exist it is illegal for the prostitutes to have sex without a condom.

why not? Warn the users of the dangers. No, I agree with the OP. 85% of all property crimes here are Meth related, most of those being junkies looking to steal something to sell for their next fix. It wouldn't matter if it were legal or not, you'd still have an addict problem, except I can't see why it would be any better if it was legal.

Victimless crime? VICTIMLESS CRIME!?

What about the prostitute who is held in prostitution by drugs from an abusive "pimp"? What about the prostitute that is beaten to death by her costumer? The Prostitute that is riddled with disease from unsafe sex. The prostitute who is homeless and in and out of jail. What about these people?

True, not all prostitutes live a life like this, and there are few that are top of the line call girls. But to say it is a victimless crime is ignorant.

Thats what i think. I mean, how is selling a service like a massage, different from selling a service like sex? How is the gov't allowed to tell us what we can and can not do with our bodies? is it because they can't regulate it and reap taxes from it?

STD city....
if you have to pay someone to have sex with you, thats pretty pathetic IMO. go get a girlfriend.

there is no proof for this theroy but i bet that more people have gotten an STD from picking up a one night stand from a bar than going to a whore. After all if the whore cant screw because she has an std she cant make a living. so she has motivation to keep clean and use protection.

umm maybe because those are street whores? there is a big difference between a street whore and a brothel whore.

most of the things u've listed are only because its illegal. hookers wouldn't have to turn to pimps and be at risk of predators if they were protected by the law. driving things underground is sa good way to riddle something with evil people.
just make alcohol illegal, and u will see the mobsters and gangters profiting and running the trade. its just how it is.

Prostitution itself is a victimless crime. It is the criminal element that runs it because it is illegal that causes the problems you speak of.

Not a single one of those problems exists in the legal brothels of Nevada. Why? Because it's legal and control has been torn from the gangs and crooks.

So if you hate those problems, hate the fact that prostitution has been driven underground by laws banning it.

Crimes surrounding alcohol during prohibition were EXACTLY like crimes surrounding drugs are now.

The criminal element disappears as soon as the sale and import profits are removed.

When was the last time you saw an alcoholic kill someone for a bottle? When was the last time you saw liquor dealers do drive-bys on each other?

Prostitution leads to abuse and slavery of women.

Just wait until they come out with Holodecks or Interactive Brainwave Playback.

See, the thing is that they COULD regulate it and they COULD reap taxes from it. You have established massage parlors yes? Well you could certainly have established bordellos, complete with services, rates and parking spaces. The girls are hired, so they have a w-4. There's nothing different about it from any other personal service, other than the service itself.

As a bonus it also does a few more things.
1) encourages girls to get off the streets
2) dis-empowers the pimps
3) provides the ability for regular drug and std tests (for both the working girl and the John...just like donating plasma).

I honestly can't see a valid reason to not legalize prostitution.

Not if regulated like any other business. If porn were illegal, it would lead to abuse and slavery of women. It is the very illegality and resulting underground black market run by criminals that leads to the abuses associated with prostitution.

None of the legal brothels in Nevada abuse or enslave their women.

The same thing can be said for the law as to why you must be 21 to consume alcohol, while 16 is old enough to drive and 18 to vote. Other stupidity is that it is illegal to possess marijuana because it is deemed dangerous, while tobacco, alcohol, glue, guns, etc? are allow.

Yeh what everyone else said, plus they chose that lifestyle. In amsterdam the girls have are within reach of calling law enforcement if they feel someone is acting inappropriately. If it were legal, there would be no pimps

Indeed. The show I watched portrayed them as quite happy and wealthy. The women all claimed they did this because they loved sex. I can't remember, but I believe they were tested weekly for STDs.

The only reason its illegal is because of morality legislation, by both feminists and religous groups. The only reason things surrounding it are so horrible is because its illegal. If you think about it for just a moment, you realize that its illegality walks all over our rights.

Do you remember when alcohol was made illegal? What did that accomplish? Did it stop people from drinking? No, they made gut rot moonshine and the mafia was born.

I feel the same way about prostitution that I feel about all forms of "morality" legislation.

What, was there a George Carlin special on last night? In 4 pages that exact bit has been referenced 3 times.

In related news, for what was dubbed as a 'monday morning flamefest', ATOT seems to have kept it together pretty well so far.
