Why is SETI so powerful?

According to BOINCstats, SETI currently holds 185.178 Teraflops out of the 300.585 Teraflops of the total BOINC network. No offense to SETI, but of all of the BOINC projects, it is one of the least likely to obtain tangible results relative to its objective (aside from BURP). I can understand that many users are left over from SETI classic, so it has age on its side, but I did SETI for a while and then completely shut it off when BOINC made other, more useful projects such as Predictor and LHC available.

The best explaination I can provide you is the your fellow cruncher have always strived to encourage each other to crunch for whatever project holds the most interest to them, just please do it under the TeAm AnandTech banner.

That said, it should go without saying that each individual's interests and priorities are going to vary somewhat based on their own experience. As long as we do respect each other's interests, the TeAm will remain cohesive and effective.

Well Said Networkman

I think people want to prove there is other life out there. Plus its a long shot and people love an underdog

I don't want to fold for SETI, because i'm pretty sure there is other life out "there" it's just who knows how many light years away, why bother with something that probably won't happen for millions of years (if we even survive that long) when we have problems here today like diseases or other things. Won't it be easier to just wait for the Aliens to contact us LOL, or maybe we're too arrogant to think they'll even want to contact us

I am currently doing folding@home for the team, but I crunched seti classic till the end. I would never walk into a TeAm and tell them that one if their projects is less useful. You could make the arguement either way, what if we made contact with other beings that hold the cure to cancer? What if? Dont come in here and judge the other projects!

To each his own. I know that as individuals, we can have a strong passion for the projects we are crunching for, and even very personal reasons for doing so. And it's easy to feel that other projects aren't as important, again, based on individual tastes, choices, and passions.

But to remain a strong and cohesive TeAm, we must respect our teammate's right to chose which projects they want to participate in.

There is strength in diversity.

Speaking of well said!

I also did SETI Classic until the end, but now I am doing Rosetta@Home. I wanted a change and R@H seemed like a good choice.

It is possible that there are Aliens out there far nearer than millions of lightyears ,multiple decades is possible ,of course it'd make conversations a bit 'slow' ,but at least we would of proved its existance.
And your probably right it'd be easier for them to contact us ,but I reckon they want to make us work for it

I reckon SETI is so popular because it grabs the imagination of many
I did SETI classic til the end ,I now do a mixture of DPAD & S@H2 ,I'll always be doing something for SETI

Mainly because SETI was the first one and it's the most widely known about.

I ran SETI classic for years but when BOINC came around I switched to Predictor and now Rosetta because I think we can find more useful things from them. If aliens wanted to find us, I'm sure they'd fly right over and say Hi.

I have no problem with people who crunch for SETI, or with SETI itself. I personally believe that life is out there, but the chances of us discovering it in our present state is slim (unless they visit us ). I don't presume to judge its value, as all science is benefitial to some degree. However, I am more attracted to experiements that have better odds for a valid result. I was merely suprised by the fact that SETI holds a whopping 2/3 majority of all BOINC processing power, when there are far more productive (at least in appearance) experiments available. Granted, if SETI does find aliens, sweet .

SETI@Home is the closest thing the DC world has to a recognizable "brand". When I mention to some of my computer geek friends that I have 5 computers running 24/7 in a small, one-bedroom apartment, it's bound to raise eyebrows. When I say it's "Distributed Computing", it still elicits confusion. When I say, "oh, I'm doing SETI@Home (and its workalikes in the other sciences)" there is much better recognition. SETI@Home remains the first and only window DC for a very large part of the geek community.

Probably because a lot of diehard SETI Classic folks switched over to SETI BOINC. Not sure why so many choose not to run other projects though.

I was a SETI Classic diehard until the end, but now am running SOB, FAD, and Dimes (only because it doesn't hurt the other 2)
