Why is there a positive correlation between atheism and intelligence?

Anyone know why?

Atheism is rational, so I have a hard time understanding why the average iq of the population isn't higher since at least one in six Americans have to be atheists. At least eighty five percent of that seventeen percent are closet atheists. So are atheists who have come out of the closet smarter than those who have not?

One can look at the world and be unconvinced of a god's existence without any errors in judgment or reasoning.

EDIT: I feel I should add that there are certainly a number of irrational atheists, so it is rather more accurate to say that atheism can be rational, and I will equally concede that it is possible for theism to be rational as well, even while there are undoubtedly irrational theists.

In short, I'm not sure why his original claim was a contentious one when it really doesn't state much of consequence.
