Why isn't the PS3 easy to set up?

I haven't used my PS3 in a long time. Tonight I'm trying to watch a Blu-ray.

It says the encryption key needs to be updated, to do that do a system update.

Doing a system update, it says it's not connected to the internet on my Wi-Fi (it's changed).

Going through setup - it has a option called 'easy' that scans - it finds the network. I click it and it wants a "WPA password".

What the hell - a "WPA password" is not a consumer term.

I shouldn't have to be googling on how to find a WPA password - and so far the first links aren't helping - to use the PS3.

I've been sent to bad ip addresses. I've looked up the Default Gateway which goes to a Comcast login page that won't log in.

I've been referred to the modem where there is no clear info regarding a WPA address. I've called Comcast and am on hold.

WPA is not an address, it's the password to connect to your wireless network (otherwise anybody could use your wireless internet).

Many people don't. It's possible to forget it after years.

It's possible to not realize what password it's referring to - the PS3 setup makes people pick whether to enter a 'WPA' password whatever that is, or another type, whatever that is.

Not everyone set up their on Wi-Fi.

I finally did find it - but the should be a lot easier.

I don't get it. Is your complaint that it should say "wifi password" instead of "wpa password", or is it that you have to enter your password in order to connect to your network? The PS3 is almost 10 years old, I don't think they're going to change "wpa" to "wifi" with a software update at this point, it's really not a big deal.

While I agree it's stupid that blu-rays require updated encryption keys to play, not knowing what WPA password means is quite a shocker for these forums. Huh, guess I take it all for granted.

BTW: I have always had a sticky note with the wifi password on every router I've ever owned, just in case I forget for some reason. Might be useful in the future for quick reference.

Pretty sure almost EVERY device I have that connects to my wifi asks for "WPS Password" -- phones, tablets, consoles, PCs, laptops....

Even if you didn't know what "WPA" meant, you'd think a little common sense would prompt you to enter your "WiFi" password and give that a shot... right?

I have had the worst luck with PS3's in regards to wi-fi speed.

That reminds me that I can wire mine in now that we've re-arranged the layout.

What's doubly-stupid is that Sony promised I would never have to update my PS3 to avoid losing functionality (OtherOS/Linux). It turns out that I did because I eventually lost BD playback functionality like the OP did.

What is hilarious about the topic that consumer usability is an important design issue, and there is no excuse that kids and grandparents trying to set up the PS3 are needlessly having to deal with an interface that deals in terms most won't be familiar with instead of making the process more user friendly?

Nothing.

Hell, there are people who have problems playing their DVD players - there's an old joke around the country about the blinking 12:00 because they don't know how to change it.

But what there are are ignorant jackasses who don't understand the topic.

It's one things when playing a computer game required installing a memory manager and partitioning RAM, changing jumpers on cards to change IRQ's and deal with boot files.

PS3's are meant as a general consumer item, and it's poorly designed for that in some areas. (I won't get into the similarly inappropriate difficulty in hard disk replacement).
