I could understand this being true in the most strict sense of intelligence, IQ. The problem is that people associate "smarter" with "better." I could definitely see how those with higher IQs subscribe to the bold statement in the OP, but I wouldn't say that also means that they are "better" or "more successful," etc.

Welcome to a world where nothing really fits the labels we give it. Seems we usually screw up when we start trying to make a "lifestyle" or a "philosophy" (an -ism) out of an abstract ideal. The -ism lives on long after it ceases to resemble the namesake.

Big surprise. A known evolutionist, who is likely also liberal and/or atheistic in his views, suddenly comes out with a "study" saying that, shockingly, liberals and atheists are smarter!!

I only hope that he got funding for this so-called "study", and suddenly finds himself presented with a bill for return of payment due to lack of research performed.

Were you expecting a young Earth creationist to come out with such a study? They've proven themselves incapable of comprehending simple logic and facts.

I think this is a case of an article not literally declaring "U.S. Liberal politicians" as intelligent, but rather, people who have liberal views. Liberal politicians in the U.S., and people with liberal views, can be an extremely different case.
In short, liberal ideas can resemble those of liberal politicians, but can be quite different too.

I think it's simply a case of what beliefs people have when they are the Self-Actualizing type. These types of people are quite rare, but can also be quite vocal and thus appear to be more numerous than they truly are.
They see the world for what it is, see humans - and specifically see themselves - for what they are truly. People of this high cognitive level tend to be quite against religious beliefs, among a host of other things.
