Why live in Michigan?

I've lived there for 24 years. I plan to move back when I retire.

Michigan is not entirely comprised of all the bad news you see, hear, and read about. There are some nice areas very much worth living in.

Yeah, uhuh... I've lived in Ohio for 12 years and I still don't get the hate for Michigan. Probably because I don't give a damn about sports.

Check out the Leelanau penninsula/Traverse City/Petoskey areas. Very nice places to live, and on the water too.

1. Water sports in the summer. Lakes everywhere, sailing, jetskis, water skiing, fishing.
2. Hunting year round. Everything you can think of.
3. Skiing in the winter. Multiple locations.
4. Wilderness. Waterfalls. Yep, waterfalls. We gots 'em.
5. Schools. We've got some of the best in the country, both grade/mid/high and college.
6. Land. We're not jammed together, prices are low, and you can own a couple acres without bankrupting yourself.
7. Traffic. It's not nearly as bad as most 'built up' states.

It was too cold for me. The lake effect is brutal. I moved after my nose froze together in -14F weather. No thanks.

+1 for MSU tho

I've heard jobs are hard to come by in Michigan.
Including low waged jobs like fast food and retail.
Know one lady moved to Michigan and couldn't find anything.
Moved back to Omaha and found a job the same day.
She says one can leave a job (in Omaha that is), walk across the street and find another job.
However Michigan was another story all together. Pretty tough job market.
Companies just don't want to locate there or remain there, in Michigan that is.

Well, when no one lives there, no one eats or buys anything. And when no one eats or buys anything, there are no restaurants or shops. And when there are no restaurants or shops, there are no jerbs.

The craziest, freakiest women are always from Michigan.

So there's that.

And the mitten thing, which is neat too.

Lived in Michigan most of my life.. Up north is very nice.. SEMI fucking blows though.. Traffic, infrastructure turning to dust, everyone hates life and are assholes, A lot of the woman are crazy and or fat/out of shape, Salt dumped all over in certain spots in the winter, Other spots get no salt and have black ice so you spin out and die, RUST, Crime, Governor doesn't care if you drink lead water.. and on and on.

Downtown Detroit is coming back though..

And LOL at Ohio chiming in about Michigan.. Your state fucking blows.. Only good thing you have is Cedar Point and National Museum of the US Air Force (So Awesome!)

<---- Ohio person chiming in (MI property owner)

Northern Michigan is absolutely beautiful. Up around the Traverse City area is fantastic. The only real problem is that the winters suck. Terribly. Michigan really is almost like two states shoved together, including the people. There is no real love lost when it comes to the northern and southern people in the state politically.

If you have only seen the southern parts of the state you are missing out.

I don't know why everyone is complaining about bad weather and it being cold. With DC and Virginia about to get more snow in 2 days than we've gotten all winter I think Michigan is now north enough that we've exited the 'Terrible Snowy Winter' zone and moved into 'Pleasant 4 season' zone

All the cold kids live in North Dakota.

Michigan's a big state, and there's definitely some nice areas from what I've seen. Just stay away from Detroit

Sounds a lot like upstate NY... How are the taxes?
