I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me just how exactly your car is going to blow up by leaving it running while pumping gas.

I guess it's the stupid fear that some have of static electricity from women who get in and out of their car to check the pump and cause a spark when touching the pump or your cell phone being implanted with C4 and going off when near the pump, hence why there are warning signs saying to shut off the vehicle and keep cell phones away
Either way, i suspect the warning signs are there because some woman did something one time.

The static electricity concern is completely real and valid, but it makes no difference if the car is running or not. Cell phone is debatable, I don't believe it but again, makes no difference if the car is running. People think that the fuel vapors from pumping gas are going to get into the sealed ignition system way up at the front of the car where it might spark inside of the cylinder head/intake runner and cause a massive explosion.

Or mostly it's a rule made by people who have no idea how a car operates.

also the odds on diesel blowing up is far far less then gas blowing up.

The odds of fire or explosion from leaving a normal engine running are very small. It's a precaution because the results are worth avoiding, but it doesn't generally happen. There's just no source of ignition close enough to the tank opening to make it happen. The chances of causing a fire with static shock is astronomically higher. It's not something I would ever do, but my father used to leave his car running pretty frequently. He was worried about the battery not starting the car for a while or something.

We've all seen car fires on the side of the highway, on the news, traffic reports. They do catch fire and usually while running. Turning them off while pumping gas makes sense to me.

I have a diesel truck the turbo is oil cooled and requires about 15 mins to cool down properly when it has spooled up especially if coming off the highway. if you shut your truck down prematurely with out cooling the turbo it could fail and is very expensive to replace. If you where to take a thermal camera to the Turbo it would show lots of red and some white areas.

I leave the van running when I fill up. If not, my phone needs to resync and I have to turn the DVD player back on. Plus, my kids are usually in there and I leave the air on.

Anyway how could he go pay AND leave the motor on? He left the key in the car or what?

My car has pit stop mode, where you can take the key and still leave the car running while you run in a store or something quick.

For all but the kids; I can say - poor baby - 30 seconds of inconvenience vs safety.

The kids can last 5 minutes without AC. Unless yours are a woos.

You seriously registered to necro a nine month old thread?

Yeah turbo timer, and lets not forget about how some fords have bad glow plug relays, it can take up to an hour to start a cold truck one time, and then starts up on the first crank the next time. Yay ford.

Maybe if you live in the east coast or Midwest and during the winter you leave the truck idling but they still do it here in Los Angeles where it hardly gets colder than 50*F so they do it just to be cool.

the old Mercedes GDs we drove in the army had an oil furnace for heating the engine on those cold mornings I believe.

You should have stole the truck while he went in to pay, to show him who's boss!

But yeah seems silly to me. Even if it's cold/hot it's not a couple minutes that will make a difference. In fact when I go home for lunch in winter and I go back to work the motor is still hot enough that when I start the car it will be blowing heat within less than a minute. AC is even more instantaneous than heat.

i was kinda hopeing he would explode. hmm

You should of taken his pic and posted it up on the hume thread for shits and giggles.

I should stop using 'of' instead of 'have' for shits and giggles.^_^

so you sit and wait 15 minutes to turn it off every time? lol yea bullshit.

Which part of your turbo fails from air cooling vs being oil cooled? Huge majority of diesel owners don't do this and don't have turbo problems. Most turbos fail from dirty/boken down oil.

Agreed.
I watch my EGT and give it a minute or so after it bottoms out at 200 f.
Then turn the key on and watch it creep back up if I am curious; it never gets much above 250 in the manifold right in front ( upstream ) of the turbo flange.
In other words, there would be little gain on waiting any longer. If I was not pulling hard with it, it will already be cool just idling in to most situations. I only perform a cool down idle when towing or stopping at a rest stop after freeway speeds.

You only need to sit with a turbo after you've driven hard, if you haven't then there's no need to.

I'd file gas station idling under minor annoyance for diesel trucks. The real issue is these assholes in F250/350's / RAMs tailgate disproportionately compare to everyone else. They'll never go around you, but boy do they tailgate. IDK wtf they're issue is other than "lolz i has big truck and i can smush you little car!" If they really want to go I'll run circles around them or blow them away on the straights. Fuck off and drive like a human.

After a hard day of tracking his F350 that 15 minute cool down period is important. :awe: Maybe if he was hauling something uphill for an extended period... maybe...

or the assholes who chip their truck to pour out black exhaust. last week some asshat in a ford diesel had one big ass stack coming out from behind the cab. when he "launched" from the stop light he poured out so much black smoke you could not see the other side of the intersection.

Let's be honest...the OP rant is more about the douches driving hopped up diesel trucks than the running engine while fueling up scenario.

The reality is that there are a LOT of people in this area that need a good diesel truck to work their ranches, farms, or other businesses. There are also a TON of small penis suburbanites who buy huge diesel trucks, lift them, smother chrome all over them, and just drive them to work each day or the occasional trip to the ski slope. I understand the OP's disgust for these people and their insecurities.

And my question is... why do you even care? So they spend stupid money on stupid stuff for their stupid truck. Big friggin whoop dee do. Why does that bother you so much

Posting in a necro thread (though a relatively minor necro in comparison to some)

i have plenty of these guys around here now. it seems 1:1 dodge/ford.

sitting in the driveway:
"vroom vroom whoosh rattle rattle i'm a monster truck!"

literally 1 minute between house and highway:
"vroom vroom whoosh rattle rattle i'm an 18 wheeler and i jake brake at every opportunity and then some!"

on the highway:
"vroom vroom i'm a 9-foot tall race car and the only person deserving to live to see his destination, thus the thick black cloud swerving all over the place at 90 mph!"
