I know it really requires a gamepad to really play a racer well but u can get a USB one for like $20. So why is my only option a damn NASCAR game? Why no good titles like GT4 and others?

There are good racing games on the pc. If you are a sim fan then there's GTR, GT Legends, the old Papyrus stuff. There is also Toca 2 which is pretty good. If you like motorcycles you got Moto GP 3 and Superbike. For the ricer in you there is the Need for Speed Underground games and Most Wanted. How about NFS: Porsche Unleashed..thats a great racer.

I can't think of any Gran Turismo type games for the pc.

As for fighters its best to stick to consoles or just use emulators to play your favorite Capcom CPS based fighter or NEOGEO fighter on the pc.

I'm with the OP on driving games, I really wish I could play the Gran Turismo series... but I'm not going to buy a console just to do so. I couldn't care less about fighting games.

The Colin McRae games are excellent rally racing games. The graphics are great and the damage modeling is awesome.

Oh yeah. Re-Volt was so great. Addictive and challenging, especially the end levels.

Some other oldies but goldies: Rollcage, New York Race, Ballistics, Rally Trophy, Stunt GP, Carmageddon.

Also, another modern game called FlatOut is worth checking out. The sequel is coming in 2006.

Serious simulator: Live for Speed

Pure arcade fun (with a track editor): TrackMania & TrackMania Sunrise

Live for speed is great, although with some cars it feels like the rear tires aren't grippy enough (particularly that rear-engined convertible thingy). That and the cars aren't real, which kind of hurts things for me. I do wish we had a good simulator with real road cars (GTR I have as well, but this is all professional race cars)... My ideal would be such a game with the ability to just drive around like in GTA/Midtown Madness.

EDIT-I have heard that RFactor is good (the demo was good when I tried it), and it has a user-made add on for the McLaren F1 street car (a must for me), but this I haven't actually bought yet.

Ya, great game! I find a keyboard works best for it, though a Gamepad should work well.

Most Racing games require a Wheel, not a gamepad though.

I really miss some good games as well. I'd love to have some sort of 16 player car race online with people.

Anyone remembeer Monster Truck Madness 2? That was a fun multiplayer game.

wow, i forgot all about Re-Volt. I might have to reinstall that later.

another vote for Trackmania Sunrise - great game. Good community for free tracks too, even with the demo.

NFS series too - Most Wanted is what I've been playing lately.

LFS is developing very slowly because of only 3 man team. It's in S2 Alpha (Stage 2) version now. It is said that S3 will be the full featured version. But LFS still is simply a joy to play, especially the online games.

I haven't played rFactor but I've read lots of positive comments about it. There's a lot of good racing simulators on the market. Something for everyone Some simheads are currently raving about the upcoming NetKar Pro, some are into GT Legends etc..

Oh heck yeah,Monster Truck Madness and MTM2 were awesome. We had leagues or "clans" and had weekly tourneys on MS Gaming Zone.I was in Micro Machines BTW and my alias was MM_Syn.

Those games had a really good community and alot of player made content. They even had a convention in Vegas and people from Tri and MS were there.I didnt get to go and have always regreted it.I think i still have my copy of MTM2 around here somewhere.

There are very good racing games for the PC. I like GTR because of it's realistic aspect. More challenging than arcade racers and the number of add-on cars and tracks for it is awesome (McLaren F1 and Aston Martin DBR9 are recent releases). Another must have is Richard Burns Rally. The physics in RBR are very realistic as well.

For arcade-type PC racers, NFS: Most Wanted is ok, the pursuit part of the game is pretty good but that's about all I liked. I guess if I wanted to play arcade-type racers I'd dust off the old PS2 and play Gran Turismo.

Also, don't buy a gamepad to play racing sims on the PC. Go buy the Logitech black MOMO wheel and pedal set.

I'll recommend TOCA Pro Race Driver 3.

The online community for RD2 was pretty strong. I expect it to be the same with RD3.

It's not a hardcore sim like GPL, GTR, GTL, NR2003, etc.

But it's not quite as arcade as NFS.

It's somewhere in between.
