Why no standard way to adjust monitors by software?

Any idea why there's no standard, or at least nothing in actual use, to adjust monitors from software? I mean the equivalent to adjustments you normally do directly on the monitor. This way you can get mouse and keyboard control, automatic preset switching on software launch, better designed interfaces, etc.

It could also be used, when hooked to external gear, to do automatic color calibration.

The settings aren't all common between monitors, and since they come with their own controls for input so far its not really been beneficial to build an interface to the monitor via the protocol to allow the discovery and changing of any of these settings. Its certainly possible to add such a thing in a future spec, and it would in theory reduce the cost of monitors if they didn't have to come with buttons and OSD's so I think they might very well be interested in the idea. But as far as I know you are quite limited in what you can currently change on a monitor remotely across the wire.

The settings don't have to be common. The standard would define a bunch of standard properties. A monitor would report which properties it supports. There could also be vendor-specific properties, which include extra details such as their name, range, etc.

I would still prefer monitors to come with controls directly on them, even though I suppose software control would be the more commonly used option.

If it doesn't exist already, it could use the existing infrastructure of EDID or DisplayId.

Software controls may be nice for most people, but OSD's are terrible for gaming as the induce latency. If you look at gaming displays they have no controls at all.

Unless you mean software as in the OS. In which case, good luck. Because they all handle displays very differently, and have different defaults.

I mean software run by the PC. Of course monitors have different features, but that's what you have standards for. They don't have to implement everything, just have what they do support conform to the standard.

Since display manufacturers cannot even support EDID correctly, good luck with a standard like that.

Well Sharp is allowing their elite line of tv's to be compatible with calibration software and a link port. It will take one monitor company to set this standard before others start trying to compete.

I like the idea. Since we have digital connectors for video now we can send whatever we want over it. All they'd have to do is create a standard data package to communicate with the monitor's PCB and instead of responding to a crappy OSD, they'd use the OS's standard settings menu to make the adjustments. The major downside I can see is that every device that connects to the monitor would need to support that functionality or they'd have to also leave the OSD for support for consoles, etc.
