I just read the Artical at ExtremeTech and it says you should NOT use 0 Raid for a OS

Other than one of two drives are more likely to fail than one whats the down side???????

Beats me, I've raid0'ed my OS for more than a decade now. Sure you don't mess with the bull without being aware that it has horns, but if you know what you are doing when it comes to backups, etc, then it's about as challenging to manage a computer with raid-0 on the OS as it to manage a computer with the OS installed on a single drive.

Iv'e been running Raptors in RAID0 for years as well. Now with 300gb Velociraptors in RAID it's pretty snappy!

Final Thoughts: Superb Single Drive Performance
The Western Digital Caviar Black is one of the best 7,200RPM drives you can get, if you want to run one large, single hard drive. It's not well-suited for RAID, but then, you really wouldn't want to run a desktop drive as a RAID 0 drive if you can avoid it. It should be a superb performer in typical consumer environments.

i was just trying to help some guy who reset his cmos, which broke his raid1 array, thing is, now the windows driver is acting up and he has to reinstall windows to get it to boot.
some funky things can happen with raid on os drive, but as idoncare said, its doable if you know the risks and take precautions.

Did the guy have a backup of his raid1 array?

I don't think he's saying not to run the OS on a RAID 0, I think he's saying a RAID 0 environment is better suited with enterprise level drives.

Other than that, this particular drive's RAID 0 benchmark performance isn't much better than running a single drive, and sometime worse; because either the drive's embedded controller, firmware or a combination is choking it for some reason.

I have never had an issue running RAID-0 OS drives. As noted, backup what is important. I love it for a desktop, especially when I have downloads, uploads, RARing, unRARing, etc all going on at once. In some cases, a single OS drive will bottleneck you long for memory or CPU will.

I have the exact Raid setup 1TB Blacks and my benchmarks are great..
Maybe they have a bad drive or MoBo is not happy but so far I think my sys is much faster now than a single drive..

I don't backup my OS/Programs drives... Just as easy to reinstall. Start nice and clean.

there are PARTS of the OS drive you usually want to... your emails, your bookmarks, some programs app data (and you should have relocated your documents folder to another partition or drive... and backed it up)

You are correct, I run a backup daily that saves my user data (favorites, etc) along with my entire data drive.

very good then, but yea the majority of the OS drive can go, thats the whole point of a clean format after all.

With WHS backup, I couldn't be bother what happens to my OS drive. However I would just get a quality SSD instead, but that's me. No MLC except Intel.

Have a spare drive with OS solely for overclock/bios testing.

It sucks to have a corupted windows install due to cpu/ram/pcie instability or some bonehead bios maneuver that nukes you raid array.

If this is the same article that I am thinking of, it is from the WD 1TB Black review. As Gooberlx2 is alluding to, the 1TB benches in RAID are terrible. I have asked several times why this is the case when the 640GB Black (and the blue version) perform terrific in RAID 0. I have never got a clear answer, but I think it must be some bug in the 1TB drive firmware and not motherboard/controller related since the other Caviar drives perform well. So to the point, like someone else suggested, the article comments about not running RAID 0 is directed toward the specific drive.
