Actually, many kids don't understand healthy eating habits, especially in lower income neighborhoods. If their parents don't teach it to them, who will?

If they want to improve health they should look at school lunches (if they offer them there). The ones in my high school were loaded with fat and calories and pretty much no whole grains or anything. Their idea of fruit was basically two slices of banana and a whole strawberry in a sugar laden "sauce".

Agreed 100 percent. Although I don't understand why you'd promote healthy school lunches but not snacks.

this is easy to take care of.

grab the books from last year,
grab the current books.

show the deficit, and use it to back a tax hike that comes right to the schools. .... watch the reversal come in at relativistic speed.

The reason kids don't want to eat healthy is because their parent's can't cook anything that doesn't come out of a box. If you're raised on good, fresh, delicious food cooked nicely, candy bars and packaged snacks are gross.

Why are you against promoting healthy eating?
This has absolutely nothing to do with the school budget.......hmmmm

At my last year of HS long ago, they banned fried food, candy, soda, ice cream. Basically anything that was good. It wasn't just the sale that was ban, it was possesion of these items was forbiden on school campus.

Now that is ridiculous. I somewhat understand not selling the food in the school as to not promote unhealthy eating, but restricting the possession of such items in the school is infringing on the students and parent's rights.

Actually it does. $105,000 extra money for a single school? Not a district, the school itself. That is a lot of money. Thats 2-3 teachers (depending on level of education).

That money went straight to the discretionary fund that was used to buy new books, teaching aides things like that

Money for the schools should come from local taxes, not turning the schools and students into fund raising organizations. I managed to get through 12 years of public school without having crap peddled to me so the school would have extra cash.

Edit: Just so you don't think I am being an ass I work in a middle school and fully understand what the loss of that money will mean but I still believe that the money should come from local government and not from "business partners" and sales of cokes and junk food.

It's a requirement of the masters and doctorates (but mostly doctorates) - to be completely disconnected from reality. This is especially true for college professors.

FALSE!

Not completely false. Most parents can't/don't cook anything "real" anymore. But i'll contend that a candy bar is delicious no matter what.

oh i agree that many parents dont/cant cook. what is false is the fact that kids that have "good" food daily is going ot think candy bars are gross.

It's not the schools position to try and break social norms. It's impossible to force something on people if there is a demand for pop/soda/Gatorade/snacks, and yes, the kids will just go to the local wawa/rite-aid/walgreens or bring it in themselves.

It's a twisted and simple logic, but also wrong. The problem is with our society, and pretty much all industrialized countries lean toward the same eating habits. A school's job is to educate, it's not their job to try and break various social standards. For whatever reason, people keep mixing up what they expect from a school.

I take it most of you have never taught before. Yes, that stuff is taken out of schools because of health concerns. It's also taken out of schools because little Johnny is impossible to teach when he's bouncing off the walls when he's tripping on sugar and caffeine.

As soon as bouncing little Johnny is affecting the educational environment (other students can't learn because Johnny is disrupting class), then schools can start regulating things like what candies and pops are available for sale. I don't, however, agree with schools telling parents that they can't pack a candy bar in their kid's lunch.

Seriously, when was the last time you heard of any committee or government body acting with common sense? I realize this is stupid, but I've actually come to expect it and am completely unsurprised.
