why oh why is symantec so prevalent in the corporate world.

Every single day it's some issue with their endpoint, AV, backup exec. Out of the box configs slow computers to a crawl, clog our network, fk up the backups.

And somehow they get away with making it so damn expensive. It's not just one place, every place that I've worked at that is heavily vested in symantec has tons of issues.

Just use the cloud services, let them handle the backend and you're fine...

Symantec and McCafee are the only two major players in the corporate/government market. That's pretty much it. They both suck though so I use neither at home.

SMC SNAC is the bane of my existence. I have such a slow computer at work that I try and shut it all off, it has no use as I don't surf the net except a few forums. Not like I'm going to get something off ATOT.

But then the local IT has a fit and wonders why it isn't running. BECAUSE MY COMPUTER IS 4 YEARS OLD AND IT RUNS LIKE CRAP WITH IT ON!!

Probably the same reason all the computers from big manufacturers were made with Intel chips, because they cut them sweet deals to not carry AMD.

I use ShadowProtect for backups now. For antivirus, I like GFI's antivirus based on Vipre.

I worked with backupexec and it's not bad actually though that's only after working with Tivioli. LOL. Some ridiculously long command lines and stuff, we had no documentation other than a single page saying what command to type in... was terrible. Eventually it just stopped working and nobody could fix it. The only thing I did like about Tivioli is that it tells you what tapes to put in as it manages the retention for you. I was told it was a really powerful system, but it did not help we had zero documentation and everyone hated it because it was command line. Not really the product's fault per say, though.

I like Symantec, I use it in our company. Av does a decent job, but no AV product is going to be outstanding today with way threats are nowadays. I have had zero issues with Backup Exec, about as good as ARC Serve. I think its the admins, more than the software .

I loved backup exec 2010. I hate 2013 or whatever the latest version was. It was slow, clunky, and took twice as long to do whatever I wanted it to do. Are you running 2013 and you're happy with it?

Actually apparently the new Norton Antivirus is not as bad as it used to be. It seems all AVs suck in their own ways though, the only one I'd say I really enjoyed working with was NOD32. It had a nice management console too.

I am still using 2010. About to actually do a new backup server, then I will install the latest. But I can say its not bad, it has worked for us. 150+ people.

The simple answer is contracts. They lump a bunch of products together and discount the price based on a yearly site license/contract. Once the business or govt entity jumps through the hoops to get the contract approved, they have to pay to implement the software. After they do all that, they're invested in the product.

The cost of switching to another company that may be slightly better is much higher than the cost of the new contract. We wanted to switch to Microsoft's AV solution because it was essentially free....but couldn't drop Symantec because the implementation cost of switching would cost about as much as simply renewing our existing contract. (since we have other things bundled in it)

I agree AV software is junk.

if it makes you feel any better, we use mcafee

Poor bastards...the only two times I've picked up any kind of virus...I was running Macafee...Norton picked the virus up immediately and corrected the problem. Macafee never could find them.

They completely fucked up their last upgrade. We put it into test and it immediately backups far more difficult than they need to be. We're still with the previous version, not that it's a great system but it works, and we're looking to dump Symantec entirely and go with something like Unitrends. I saw a demo of the product, and it's a backup system of beauty.

Ugg Symantec... At least no one has mentioned Altiris, you would think they asked SAP to help them design that steaming hyper-complicated unintuitive POS.

I had to admin endpoint/AV years ago. Clients would just go off into a black hole and stop reporting in, not get defs, or slow the computer down so much users would call up screaming.

Was just coming in here to post about Altiris! We use it for our desktop and server patching, and I HATE it. Server patching is a complete nightmare with it, and we're constantly in a patch remediation loop when that piece of shit doesn't work.
