Why oh why would someone go to India as a tourist?

I very much enjoyed my vacations in India. It all depends where you go. If a tourist visited the US and only visited the worse places it would be no different.

BS! The worst places in the US do not compare to the slums of India!

I believe you.

Actually I have. I had to go really bad one day and it was either take a dump in my car, or go in public near the West Side Highway. There was no time to find a bar or McDonalds.

Squatted down between 2 parked cars and let it rip. Lucky I had paper in the car. Friend of mine was laughing his ass off.

It was pretty refreshing. I also took a dump in the Subway tunnel between 51st and 59th on the 6 line northbound track.

This stuff can happen anywhere but there seems to be an attitude against certain people within America. It's like saying why go to Russia as a tourist because of gangs, or why go to Mexico because of violence etc.

The world is a really messed up place, not just India. India gets a lot of attention but it is part of a collective group.

You're right, of course, terrible behavior should never be singled out and discussed. Rather, it should always be ignored and accepted because "everyone is doing it!" :whiste:

What are we doing about it rather than talking about it? If we "ourselves" change rather than worrying about changing somebody else, the world wouldn't be what it is.

I don't get it. Is it the grinding poverty that makes them want to go? The filth and disease coupled with the hellish climate? Oooh, I know, maybe it's the opportunity to be gang-raped.

Seriously people, take your vacations in non-shithole countries.

Well after a headline like that , I'm sure the answers to your question in the affirmative are much less compelling.

People go to India a lot for the Eastern spirituality aspect. Eg, Steve Jobs, the Beatles. Katy Perry and Russell Brand went there for a Hindu marriage ceremony.

I don't know, would those be considered "touring"? When I think of touring I think of sightseeing, creature comforts, resorts and restaurants. I don't know if anyone goes to India for that.

Are you a politician? You just typed some crap that didn't address your original statement at all...

No, it's not OK stick your head in the sand. Yes, it's OK to point out this behavior.

India has many unique things to see and tasty food so I don't understand the hate.

That said, I think it's really stupid to go wild camping and moving around on a bicycle in poor countries since you make yourself a prime target for thieves. They also camped close to some poor village, which is beyond stupid because people sleeping are an even easier target...
If you want to be alternative and do eco-green trips, do it in safe places like Europe, although it's more difficult to find places to put your tent outside of official camping places so it requires some planning or google maps with satellite pics to find bushy areas. In big cities there are hostels though so that's easy.

In poor countries I'd stick to hotels.

Yes, this is considered crap by 99% of the world - that is why the world is what it is.

Ghandhi said that one must be the change he wishes to see in the world. That is simply a concept. Too bad it is never ever practiced.

Carry on.

I'm betting they had a ton of security and not just camping in some random spot while biking.

India is a shithole. Lots of places are a shithole, but that doesn't excuse the disgusting gang rapes we keep hearing about. Just like Mexico and its violence, just because Sudan is violent too doesn't make Mexico any less shity.

These threads serve to remind people not to fucking vacation there!
