It's easy for you to sit on your computer and call other countries names. It says far more about you than the country your calling that name.

I've been all over the world and I'll give you guys a few very basic reasons to go to India:

1. Most colorful place in the world. You have to see it to believe it. I really should say it's the most sensual place in the world since all your senses will be overloaded.
2. One of the best cuisines. Even if you don't like Indian food you will after visiting India.
3. Taj Mahal - Most beautiful building I've ever seen. If that's not good enough for you there are plenty of other palaces that will blow your mind. Hit up the Golden Temple or maybe Hampi.
4. Some of the friendliest people on the planet. In Southern India I was repeatedly invited to people's homes, to eat off their own plates, and given rides back to my hotel.
5. Constant mayhem is actually fascinating to see. At breakfast an elephant is running past your hotel, at lunch there's a Muslim festival blocking all traffic, at dinner there is something crazy going on that you simply cannot figure out involving the full moon and a gazillion candles.
6. Diversity. It's incredibly diverse. There's something really cool about seeing everything above combined with the Sikh, Islam, Christian, and Hindu religions.
7. Nature. Wanna see animals or the Himalayas? Between India and Nepal you're in a really good place.

Oh and those posting pictures of dead bodies on the Ganga really should read about what you're posting. Out of context pictures are out of context.

Who wakes up in the morning and says, "Man, I'd really like to bike through India!"

Sad story though. People are fucking disgusting.

Another factor is this whole BS about modernizing and adopting Western influences. Ever since India has been copying the West, it has lost everything. The Western approach India has been adopting has not worked, period. What works in the West needs to stay in the West. India needs to do what works in India.
You mean like, indoor plumbing?

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/03/...-india-gang-rape-show-india-isnt-so-backward/

it happens everywhere. The reason we heard so much about the Dec 2012 gang rape in delhi was because of the thousands of people who marched in the streets for weeks demanding reforms & justice. As a result the media is on heightened alert for the keywords +india +rape. In the US we have Candy Crowley on CNN lamenting the promising lives that the steubenville football players lost.

True, but comparing the status of men vs women is more telling about the overall condition of the country.

One could argue that the status of women compared to men is a good indication of how effective the government is in that particular country. Women are not idiots, so they would vote for their own rights if the issue came up during an election. Whomever advocates more equal rights for women would automatically win because they would get 100% of the female vote and some of the male vote as well. If a country doesn't have equal rights, that would indicate the country is horribly broken in terms of democracy and overall government effectiveness.
-lack of equal rights laws would mean there is a lack of democracy
-lack of enforcement of said laws indicates ineffective government

Knowing about India's weird problem of gang rape, what does that tell you about the condition of the country? People are not afraid of the police. They can pull shit like that in broad day light and get away with it. What else can they get away with? Can they cut your throat and jack your stuff? I wouldn't be shocked if they could.

india has also had female presidents and prime ministers. you can't focus on one aspect and generalize that to the status of men vs. women.

What the hell are you even trying to say?

We should go to India and call it a shithole to its face? Can't be talking about India behind its back?

I went to India as a tourist and loved it. Its a hard place to visit if its your first trip out of the US however. The culture is very different and the press of people can be pretty intense. You have to be careful about where you go and trust your intuition to get the hell out of places where you start feeling something bad develop. That's not unique to India however. A lot of countries you need to be on guard. As a tourist you're a target. There are just so many unique things to see there, both beautiful and horrible.

I would love to go to Kolkata both to visit one of my favorite offshore contractors, as well as to see the birthplace of Satyajit Ray. I'd like to got to Chennai to meet some more of the contractors we work with on a regular basis. I want to go to Hyderabad for some biryani, as well as to explore some favorite places of a friend who was born and raised there. I would love to Visit New Delhi to visit places recommended by a friend who was born and raised there. Nice people, interesting culture, awesome food, it would be an adventure.

I am from hyderabad and you have to visit that city during the month of Ramadan and eat Haleem.

I am a vegetarian, but my friends crave for Haleem like no other food.

I knew a guy from Hyderabad and this echoes what he said. Hyderabadi haleem and biryani is the best, preferably made from goat.

Yes, Goat is what my friend at work recommends too. I have had Goat biryani at an Indian place in Chicago's "Little India" neighborhood (Devon Ave), but, I've been told it's not at all the same
He has brought some biryani from his mosque after his Friday prayers a couple of times to share with us in the office.. but that is a much milder/more subtle recipe....

Haleem sounds awesome, That would really make for an amazing "once in a lifetime" vacation.
