online activation sucks for those without internet, yes many many of them exist and many many of them enjoy playing single player games

I would die to see statistics of gamers that don't have Internet access. I bet it's an absurdly small minority.

itll varry wildly by how you define "gamer"

I'd say that's .. fairly .. true. Who doesn't have internet access? The impoverished, the extremely rural/urban (most likely also impoverished) .. and .. and .. no one else? Maybe some hippies who just don't want their kids to have access to things (the next generation of parents who previously didn't want their kids watching cable?). Either way, I'd be pretty willing to bet that the same people who don't have the Internet are also not big PC (and to a lesser degree, console) gamers.

AFAIK, you can turn off auto-updates for a game.

Steam is actually a great compromise. I just picked up Bioshock there for $5 (on sale). I refused to buy it earlier due to its horrific securom DRM but I don't mind Steam at all. In fact Steam as some perks.

I could use PayPal to buy, the download was hella fast and all updates were pre-applied. Even defrags game files. Good system.

My only worries are what happens when Steam is down (it happens & is annoying for multiplayer games as you're sol until service is restored) and should Valve go belly-up what then happens if you need to reactivate on a new PC?

They could solve those problems by simply releasing a non-hindered version at some point down the road when they've made all the money they'll likely make.

That's what Valve have stated they would do, in the event of very bad things happening.

If Valve went belly up, it would probably be bought out and absorbed by another publisher/developer which could carry on their services. If it ever should come to that point I would imagine we would have some heads up.

It sucks for me because I live in fear of having to reformat my laptop when I'm not able to get internet access for prolonged periods of time when I travel to various jobs.

make a back up disc

You miss the point, I have to active it online when I have no internet connection.

Not true. Remember "ripped" games, that didn't have sound, or movies, etc just to decrease the download size? The pirated copy was clearly inferior.

Not to mention that occasionally DRM actually works. But then the pirates blame the publishers, instead of themselves.
