Why people go Intel...

Often I see people asking why companies and universities always buy Intel over AMD. The conspiracy theories always overflow about Intel lying to everyone...

I just got this on ICQ from a buddy of mine who works at a big bioinformatics company in Boston.

"So this guy at my work just built a huge linux cluster using AMD chips and the damn thing runs so hot with all 80 CPUs going that our dedicated A/C for that room has to be upgraded now. It can't keep up with the heat those damn things put out."

And this is Boston, in March. Not exactly warm weather.

Wonder how long they gave him to clean out his office...

I work for a really small computer shop, and my boss doesn't like selling AMD's unless the customers asks for one because of the heat problems.

From the boss:
"what if the fan stops working"
"what if the heatsinks pops off"
"I can't afford to buy new cpus if the something happens"
"I had a P3 1ghz running at just 32C"



Anyways, I like Intel because you can use really quiet fans on them. But I don't like them because they are way over priced.

Most people go Intel because they feel Intel is more "reliable". Businesses spend all their money on servers that have Intel processors because they don't want their servers and workstations burning out because of insufficient cooling. Personally, I would go with AMD...
