Why should I not buy a "refurb" processor from newegg?

I cannot see why I should not. I am assuming maybe these are returns that simply did not overclock? Newegg would of course test and not send out a chip that is actually damaged, right? There is a substantial difference in price and I am not too concerned if it will not overclock too far...

Well newegg is great with returns, I can understand not wanting to with ebay though...

How long are the warranties on OEM and OEM refurb CPUs at newegg anyway?

I've bought 2 refurb motherboards and a refurb video card from them. The video card came in a retail box with everything, all the bundled games and cables. The motherboards came in retail boxes and came almost complete, they didn't come with the spdif connectors. Processors are a little different, but you have a 7 day warranty.

I got a 3400 Clawhammer back when they cost > $400. I saved myself about $100 and the chip was just fine. I would be willing to bet a good portion of their "refurbs" are really just not very good overclockers like somebody said above.

Newegg doesn't do any testing either so they could very well be DOA. Personally, I'll spend the extra cash and get the 3 year warrenty from AMD.

Prices on newegg refurb cpus aren't very good. For a few dollars more, I would buy a retail boxed new one with 3 year warranty.

YMMV with refurbs. They do have a few days warranty. The most recent refurb CPU I got from Newegg was a mobile AXP 2400 35W that doesn't overclock too well, only gets just over 2GHz. I saved $20. Fair tradeoff. Be wary because they don't guarantee you get all the accessories (I'm missing some motherboard ATX backplates, etc.) and sometimes the pricing is REALLY close to what they normally sell for. Just look up the normal price for the item and decide for yourself.

FYI with motherboards and video cards I've gotten stuff that was basically new in box as well as stuff that was just the bare card/mobo.

I'm thinking that it will probably come down to overclocking. I suppose I will get the refurb since I am only going to be running at stock speeds anyway, and am just looking for something that doesn't run too hot...

Not overclocking? Buy the refurb and save a few bucks. Just thoroughly torture test the CPU ASAP.
