What do I get that win 7 doesn't have?
you get bugs, bugs, and more bugs

+ your data and search results are being sent to Microsoft by default + horrible DPI scaling + automatic updates that you cannot control + automatic driver updates that you cannot control; even if you set the device installation setting to never install drivers from Windows updates, the moment you go online, Windows updates will download all drivers and what's worse, it installs them all in one shot without the proper way that we Pros know which is to restart after each driver update.

Its free and instead of being supported for the Next 5 years (Win 7) you will be supported for the next 10 years (Win 10).

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle

Hmm... I think that Support is Not so important!

Well, it is getting there, the move from "Real Live" to the Interment "Make Believe Live" is growing in Geometric pace.

Since the Internet is opened to the world, the "fleecing" of American is getting soon close to be into the Trillions, without support we will not be able to go on.

Exactly, Lot's of bugs still. I was getting at least 1 BSD a day when I was running 10 from a clean install. Lot's and lot's of errors in event viewer. Windows 7 event viewer is clean and I get NO BSD errors at all. Waiting till at least SP1 at the very earliest before I try again....

same here bro. it's a very bad idea to install an OS when it first releases, drivers are not yet optimized and mature, OS bugs, incompatible software (sometimes), etc.

I like the initial feel of it, but then come to use it, one bug after the other.

DirectX 12 and some semblance of the start button you are used to. Otherwise it is just like 8.1.

Same here. But how much do you want to bet SP1 isn't released before the one year anniversary.

Agreed. I wouldn't even bother at all if it wasn't for dx12. I'm waiting till there's a game I really like uses it. Then I'll decide then if it's even worth it.

well it could be a good while until DX12 games are out so I am going to wait for a good while until the OS bugs are ironed out and then give it another try, but at the current state, it is an unusable OS for me with all those bugs and driver update chaos

ROFL $9K PC and it can't run 10. Utterly hilarious.

There will be no service packs at all.
Win 10 is a rolling release, patches come in all the time, there is no patch tuesday either.

Well, Win 10 cumulative patch 2 came out yesterday, which was a Tuesday.

Yeah, but they said they will deploy patches 24/7.

Microsoft plans to push out patches to Windows 10 users as soon as the fixes are ready, on a 24/7 basis, potentially reducing the time that PCs might vulnerable to threats by as much as a month. This new system includes all devices running Windows 10, be they PCs, tablets, or smartphones. Myerson noted that Windows 10's update system "will also be regularly delivering ongoing Windows innovation in addition to security updates."

In my opinion, you should not "upgrade". Perhaps DX12 would make the almost total loss of privacy along with all the bugs would make it worthwhile for a gamer, otherwise I can't see why anyone would downgrade their main OS to 10.

So the best reason to upgrade a 4 year old pc, is that it will be supported for another 10 years? While I'm sure that someone has a 14 year old pc, what percentage of them are still operational?

Okay, I have a Windows ME pc that has been collecting dust for the last 5 years. But I never thought about upgrading it to Windows 7 in 2011 so that I could be using it in 2020.

I know this is not the buy and sell forum, but if anyone is interested in a 15 year old Windows ME machine, let me know.

I did it on 2 of my computers, as it was a free way to go from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows.
I also installed Classic Shell to make the start menu more useful. if you already have 64-bit windows, then there is really not much of a reason to upgrade. The out-of-the-box experience is better than Windows 8, but still not as good as Windows 7.

The only reason would be DX12, otherwise I'd stay as far away as possible from this Trojan Horse/Spyware!

But even with DX12, unless you are running games taking advantage of it and unless you have GPU that has support for it, it will be at least one year before DX12 starts making a difference.

So right now, I'd say there is nothing there for you to upgrade, in the future you might want to upgrade just because of DX12, after about a year or two.

I was considering buying a new Windows laptop, because my 6 year-old Windows 7 laptop with 1.3 GHz Core 2 Duo class CPU was slow, even with an SSD and 4 GB RAM. However, I really didn't want to do that, since it's my secondary laptop. (My main laptop is a MacBook Pro.)

Windows 10 has breathed new life into it. It's much snappier than before for OS navigation. Browsing is still slow, and will get slower as sites continue to get more complex, but at least it's overall more usable now. It should last me a couple more years, as a secondary laptop.

Also for my guest computer, which is a dual-core 1.6 GHz Atom machine, for me it was extremely irritating to use, even just for navigating around the OS, even with SSD and 3.25 GB RAM. (Not all of the 4 GB RAM is recognized.) However, with Win 10, it feels decent to navigate around. However, I must admit that web browsing on it is still quite irritating. I guess that's good for a guest machine though since it discourages them from staying too long.

1) DX12
2) Some unnecessary crap which will make you angry
3) ?

On the other hand, it's "tolerable" with Classic Shell. Unless you really have a need to, want DX12 etc. I would stay with Win7. Don't get me wrong, I am always one who wants the latest and greatest especially when it concerns Windows, but since Win8, 8.1 and 10 I think at times whether I should just go back to 7. MOST of the stuff coming with 8++ is as necessary as a hump on the back.

I see Win7 as the last still "homogeneous" OS for desktops, every OS afterwards seems like a chaotic hack to me where many of the added things just don't make sense. Tiles, using words like "swipe", "tap", START, now the separation of some settings into control panel, others into "PC settings" w/ entirely different GUI<--- this OS was made by half-wits who have no clue about ergonomics and intuition and who entirely lost touch with their customers. I'd be a very happy camper with a way to get DX12 on 7, sadly there ain't. I'd probably convert back ALL my PCs to 7 and laugh at the poor people using 8, 8.1 or 10.

MS couldn't care less about 7 anymore. Its extended support only. Win 10 is it. You'll end up using it eventually anyway.

dude, seven was a chaotic hack too. Vista had more clean design elements left over from XP than 7 has cohesion
