why shouldn't I buy a WD TV Live Hub?

Currently have an apple tv. I hate encoding all the time so I put XBMC on it.

XBMC takes too much work to configure and the interface is not wife friendly (too many options)

The WD TV Live Hub looks to be perfect for me.

1. Component hookups are required. NO HDMI tv or receiver for me.
2. Dead simple interface.
3. Local storage. Streaming of wireless N still sucks.
4. I only watch tv shows and movies on this. No music/no online content. But if Hulu was there I would take it

So why shouldn't I get this? Does something out there meet my needs better?

I have a hub, I use it to play HD .mkv files which it does flawlessly. Hooked up via HDMI and playing files from the local HD, usb attached storage, and via the network. It has a few quirks/bugs which are supposedly being worked on by WD, but I'm very pleased with it so far.

How are there too many options in XBMC for the wife? She just selects something to play and you're done.... You only really need to tinker with the settings once, which I will agree... it's not fun doing it with just the Apple remote.

Do you mean there are too many options on the main screen? Because you can remove almost all of those options. On my HTPCs that run XBMC, I just leave Music, System (obviously ) and Videos up.

I use a WD Live box and it does everything you want. I have mine connected via wireless and stream 1080P over 5Ghz with no problem. I use a netgear bridge I paid $30 for. It won't do straight BR rips but encoded properly they are fine.

my apple tv with xmbc seems to stuggle with streaming...plus my wife hates having to mess with my computer just to watch something.

WAP is very important in our house

The WDTV Live Hub sounds perfect for you so far... but when you start upgrading your home theater and get an audio receiver - the WDTV does not bitstream/pass through HD audio with HDMI connection as stated in AnandTech's review of the Western Digital Live Hub

The live will do waht you want. If you want a full HTPC experience there are better options . But for $100 or less you really can't beat the set top boxes. Just plug and play.

My wife is the same way. I have a server set-up so what she wants to watch just "shows up". She doesn't care how it gets there as long as it does. All she has to do is turn the Live box on and navigate either the movie or tv folders, same as with what your looking at just the hard drives aren't attached.

well if you got an xbox or ps3 you can stream movies from your computer and on to your gaming system then onto your t.v. you just gotta sync your gaming system to your computer with a wireless router plus the ps3 also serves as a blu-ray player. plus the best website to download movies that are virus-free is www.kickasstorrents.com jus check out the comments left by other people to make sure your getting a good quality movie usally the best files to download is the dvdrip or the B.R.rip files. and also they have music, books, computer apps etc...

You may want to take that pirate site out of your post before you get a spanking from a mod.
