I'm going through the drive-thru today and see the driver ahead of me pay with cash. It got me wondering why go through the hassle of dealing with spare change and having to get get more cash from the bank when you can simply use a credit card. Not to mention the benefit of cash back rewards (we get over $50/mo. back from casual spending). Why do you still use cash?

I use cash when making small purchases from small businesses. It keeps their costs down which helps them stay in business to be there the next time I want to purchase something from them.

For drive-throughs, I've gone to CC for the reasons you stated. CC processing is fast enough now that it is no longer slower to pay with a CC.

Spare change isn't much hassle, goes into the pocket, then into the jar. I generally use my card, but sometimes cash is just more convenient.

Yep, this too. Living in a small town, we mostly have small businesses here.

I don't use cash. I have $30 in my wallet in case I have to pay cash. That same $30 has been in my wallet for over a year now, maybe a year and a half.

I still like using cash for private transaction. I paid cash for my recent car purchase. He was happy, and I was happy.

The only time I get cash out to use myself is when I'm going on vacation and out of the country and want to have cash in case I need it. I usually come back with a shitload of cash because most places I vacation take credit cards too.

But I can't remember the last time I paid for something with cash, unless it was someone giving me money they owed me and I just had cash around. But with Venmo I rarely get cash from people that owe me money anyways.

Plus, I haven't paid for a flight (other than taxes) for myself, my wife, and my son, in like 5 years due to credit card points and bonuses.

You're allowed to give discounts for cash purchases in MI so there is a potential financial benefit here although how much of one varies by establishment

I got $25 off a rear pinon seal job on my truck when I pulled cash out of my wallet. Might not have ever made it to the books. Good for them.

One financial theory is that there is a greater attachment to cash and/or other benefits to using cash that helps people be more cognizant of how they spend money and to spend it more wisely. $50 cash back reward is useless if the CC encourages you to buy more than $50 worth of things you didn't need.

For example, maybe you eat out on your work lunch everyday because it is more convenient then preparing a pack lunch. Well, if you had to make an extra trip to an ATM to get cash to pay for those meals, that might help you decide to save money by making eating out less convenient.

Other reasons include:

Some people don't have enough credit to get a CC, or were so bad at paying them off that their CCs are maxed out and unusable.

Concerns about the prevalence and ease of CC theft compared to muggings for cash.

Buying gifts for one's spouse without them seeing you went shopping at their favorite store.

I guess I only use it to give a couple dollars to the collection basket at my weekly AA meeting, lol. And to play bingo at the casino, cause they for some genius reason don't allow debit/CC purchases to buy cards (they used to but got rid of it because it was too difficult or some other B.S. reason).

I don't want to hand over my credit card to someone else. Particularly someone I can't watch or get to while they have it.

Cash is for tips and valet. Any opportunities I can to get credit card points I will. It's funding my first class Emirates flight in April

Why care? Credit cards don't make you liable for fraud.

Was going to say the same thing after seeing multiple posts about theft.

Another credit card I have rewards me $100/year just for using it once a month and paying it off, so that in effect pays for my Amazon Prime subscription.

The only 2 instances I have to use cash is the local Chinese place knows us and skips out on tax with cash, and a private weekly lesson for my kids. It sucks - I have to think oh hey it's Thursday coming up, time to scrounge up cash again. Oh shit, that's tomorrow... sonova...
