and how exactly do you split it, on a block by block basis?

You do realize that the conservative parts of this country would be left in a world of hurt without the blue states, right? Do you realize what percentage of our GDP is concentrated in the liberal areas?
That is because the blue states have higher populations.

In 2000 Al Gore almost won by carrying just 20 states.

And then factor in the higher cost of living and higher income levels. A person making $40k a year in the north east is going to live a life style similar to someone making $30k in parts of the southeast, but that person from the north will pay more income taxes due to our progressive income tax system.

I didn't realize that CA was dependent on Hollywood to feed them...wait they aren't as CA is an agricultural giant.

People who hate themselves become sheep. The only place for a person who fears being put down, that is to say, reminded of how worthless he feels, is by actively striving to belong, to be exactly normal and like all the people around you. Naturally, the norm varies from place to place, so there is this need to try to impose your norm on all others, because among them you are weird and will be put down.

So the North is contemptuous of the south, they project their own self hate down there, and the South does the same, just like the East and the West and so on. Until you realize that your own self hate is based on being put down as a child and forced to conform to survive, we will all continue to haate the other and try to humiliate him, because we feel so worthless ourselves.

Everybody always was and is perfect just as they were born. You hate yourself because you were taught a lie which you believed, had to believe to survive.

Try to understand that the hate you feel is how much you hate yourself. It is so so sad. The wall that splits you from your true self is practically impenetrable. But there isn't anything else worth doing than to try to break it down. Good luck to you. You are going to need it since you will forget almost instantly what I just said.

Why would it possibly matter if they have higher populations? I'm not sure I understand your post. As far as I can read, you're basically saying 'GUYS THE BLUE STATES JUST MAKE MORE OF OUR GDP BECAUSE THEY HAVE MORE PEOPLE THAT MAKE MORE MONEY.' (wasn't that my whole point?)

You are right that they will pay more in income taxes, a whopping 1.8% more. In addition, it's always better to live in a higher cost of living area that you make equivalently more money in than in a low cost area because many goods and services have a relatively fixed price regardless of your zip code. Things are so cheap in the south because not that many people want to live there.

That bolded statement is utter nonsense.

Stop migrating here when you retire! Keep your snowbirds above the Mason Dixon! Seriously, how many people retire and move north?

You mean the red agricultural part of the state? You're demonstrating exactly how silly the red/blue issue is.

People don't retire and move north, they tend to live there through their prime income generating years, which was sort of my point. People move south because it is warmer, and because the retirement money they built up during their lives goes farther in cheaper climates.

Property values have an awful lot to do with the amount of land available as compared to the amount of people that want to use that land. The Northeast and West Coasts have a large amount of people that want to use their land per acre, the South... not so much. Hence, the South is cheaper.

And the proportion of people who want to live there is considerably lower than in the Northeast or the West Coast, hence the lower property values.

If you think that creating two separate nations wouldn't create significant barriers to trade, you are foolish. 'Hardly any inconvenience'? My ass.

Well, I guess that why we can't trade with Canada- they're a seperate nation.

Oh wait, it's not hard to trade with Canada is it?

Common knowledge? IDK about that. But I do often see the numbers misrepresented because of the reason I listed above. I believe a lot of people thinking there is little manufacturing in the SE simply haven't been here much.

Did I ever say we couldn't trade with Canada? Do you realize that NAFTA involved Canada as well as Mexico, specifically because there were barriers to trade between our two countries? Maybe they just passed it to celebrate how easy it was to trade between our two nations.

I guess you are arguing that turning the US into two separate countries wouldn't result in significant barriers to trade, that is foolish.

Jeez - my post was clearly not inflammatory or derogatory in any way shape or form. Its interesting that you seem to have lost the ability to even accept some light humor and an emoticon beer at the end.

Congratulations on the jerk of the year award...

I honestly just tried to have a laugh with him and tell him that I may not agree with his decisions, but it is good discussing topics with him anyway. I don't understand why (other than the fact that this is P&N) that warranted such a vulgar response on his part...

Ha - its kinda stupidly ridiculous how much that changes the connotation of that post. No worries though

As for the thread I seem to have derailed slightly here. - I just looked at my pay checks. 23% of my pay check goes to taxes - it would be really nice if that didn't increase any further -_-

Any time you use an "if" with the gov, it's already going to fail
The current course of spending twice as much as everyone to get worse results is simply not sustainable.
It's not sustainable, but that's ok because the US is not doing that and never has been.

Some people are seeing now that Obama is not the best thing since sliced bread, but it's obvious that no matter what he does some sycophants will never be able to admit their disappointment.
