Why the fascination with Harry Potter

Aren't we a little old to be watching/reading this? Everyone knows the ending anyhow. Harry and Voldemort will fight, and I am sure Harry will win. Big surprise there...

Please tell me why these are such great movies/books? I have read a few and find it only meant for kids. Why the interest for many adults?

However, the story just basically repeats itself coming down to Voldemort and Harry at the end. So where is the surprise?

if you want to break it down like that then nearly all books come down to good VS bad.

its a good story (though think she dragged it out to long).

Well typically with different villains. To me having the same people fight every movie is somewhat childish. Like I said, everyone knows the ending without even seeing the movie.

Ah anotherCatKillaZ thread.

Anyhow, the HP story for me was a tlr type ordeal, it just went too far on too little for my taste.

I haven't read it before, and am pretty confident that it's good/well written. Little boy wizards not my idea of fun. However, I still think there's way too much hype for the book/movies. At least it helps sales...

Maybe so, but I feel this is a different topic all together. I am not discussing the story line, but rather curious why the sensation with older people

it is a well written series that people are anxious to know how it ends.

Each book is quite different from the rest. Yes, we know it will end in a showdown of some sort, but that is no different than knowing that Frodo will end up at mount doom in LoTR.

It is the storytelling of how they get to that point which makes it great. I was in your shoes a couple of years ago, the people who loved HP that I knew were people I didn't really like so I was turned off by the whole thing.
Then, I decided to give it a shot and read books 1-5, and have been hooked since(this was before book 6 came out).

I actually don't know 1 person that has read through at least book 4 that doesn't like the series.

If you read the sticky, it says the Final Book thread, this is a question not a discussion on the final book.

I have never gotten into these books, but there are other series that do the same thing where the same battle occurs again and again but just a different place and with a little different style. Take the Star Wars books if you will, just how many ways can 2 people with light sabers fight against each other, even if they are different people it's the same battle. What I think people find interesting in these books are the creativity of the author to come up with different ways to solve things, almost like puzzles. It's not bad writing either, just different people like different styles.

BTW these types of "explain why this is good to you because I think it sucks" threads are pretty useless since you really only want to bash on something and have other people respond so you can bash on their responses. You don't really care anyways, so go pet a dog or do something else useful.

Well by saying you don't know anyone that hasn't read through the 1st 4 books, that's like saying, I don't know anyone that hasn't been to 400 Yankee games that isn't a fan.

My GF reads the HP books, and wanted me to read it. I can't read something with the ludicrous childish names that are plastered all through it. I think I read 2 pages and gave up. Plus I'm not real big on the whole "chosen one" syndrome. I like my heroes to be someone that is just doing their thing and get caught in a bad spot. Kinda like John McClaine in the Die Hard movies.

i just find it strange how adults act like you do, or are you not an adult? that would explain a lot.

i also find it strange how trolls like you aren't banned the minute they start posting.

you can say the same thing about Star Wars, Star Trek, and Lord of the Rings. They are basically the same thing.

umm...you can say that for pretty much 99% of every movie or book out there...there are plenty of times where major things have happened to the main characters.

How about someone saying he hates the Yankees without ever seeing them play?

To clarify, there is only 1 person I know that didn't like the book that much after reading 1 and 2. Then a year later, he decided to keep reading just for fun, and now loves it.
