My take on the whole talking and driving thing is this.
Like many people there have been times in the past where I had maybe a few too many drinks and drove. Although I never caused an accident during those times it doesn't mean I couldn't have. I think most people will agree with me when I say some folks are able to drive quite well with a few drinks in them while others can't! The law against drinking and driving is to protect people from those who can't handle a drink or two and climb behind the wheel. The blood alcohol level that is expectable was derived I assume using the lowest common denominator. IE Joe Blow down the street who can't drive worth sh!t after a beer or two. Although YOU may be a GREAT driver after a beer or two, HE isn't, and to protect the public they used HIS threshold as the measure. You may not think this is fair, but it's the only way to be sure of the public's safety!
Now, where as YOU may drive quite well while talking on a Cell Phone, there are MANY others who DON'T. I have run into (Or I should say by the grace of GOD so far I haven't run into) quite a few of them. To protect the public safety the only way, short of administering a distraction test as part of the driving test, TO adequately protect the public against Mary Jane Can'tdriveworthsh!t is to BAN cell phone operation while driving a car. And IMO a country wide ban will eventually come into effect and, once again IMO it's LONG over due!
Just because I drove once while drunk without killing someone, doesn't mean I won?t kill someone next time. Just because you drove ok yesterday while talking on your phone doesn't mean you will drive ok tomorrow.
BTW: I haven't driven after a drink in MANY MANY years. And I never will again. I see the danger even though I have always been a VERY good driver. You people who drive while allowing distractions that can be easily avoided should wake up and see the danger as well.
