Why the hatred against talking on cell phones?

Sparked by the thread on "are there too many phones"....what's the big deal if someone is talking on a cell phone? Ok, I understand being pissed that a phone goes off at a movie, or in class, or somewhere else quiet, but if you're on a loud bus, or on a street, or in the mall, or basically anywhere that conversation is perfectly acceptable, what is wrong with someone talking on the phone? Would you be annoying if you saw two people walking down the street talking? Or sitting on the bus talking? Of course not....so how is it different if they are talking on a cell phone? That's right, it isn't, so why do some of you get so pissy about it?

I don't have any hatred against cell phone users. Just people who are always talking on it, and it's always ringing. That makes me feel bad, because my cell phone rings twice a week, and it's my mother checking up on me

I'm not sure, but it seems to be older people who are the most vocal about their hatred towards cell phones. I don't care, but when I was a checker it did irritate me when someone was trying to buy their stuff and they were also yapping on the cell phone. Anywhere else doesn't bother me a bit.

If they are talking in a place where conversation is acceptable like you said, then it's perfectly fine. The only time I have a problem is when people are rude and inconsiderate, making noise and commotion with their phones in places where it is unacceptable. i.e. anywhere where you are supposed to be quiet. In a movie, in class, restaurants, library etc.

i only hate it when people talk on a cellphone and drive... or go in a store and checkout with a cellphone.

In the case of the car you should be watching the damn road not checking up on billys schoolwork or your Tbills...

And in the store its just plain rude.

It's not the phone itself that's bad. It's the fact that a lot of people on cell phones stop interacting with people around them. Too many people act like no one is around them when they are on the phone and don't even acknowledge the existance of others they are with. Like UglyCassanova said, some people just won't stop yapping!

Japan uses cell phone jammers to block use in theaters and other otherwise quite areas. Just a matter of time before they show up in the US. And then we can have "cell phone free zones" in areas designated.

I don't like phones in general. The majority of the time, someone in interrupted by another person calling, and when they actually talk, it's about stupid stuff.

People who need to be connected constantly are insecure asstards. Why can't they just wait 'til they get home and check their voice mail?

Finally, we agree on something. The majority of everything that people talk about on cell phones can wait until later, and is not that important.

people tend not to notice they speak way louder then normal when covering one ear its rather obnoxious. then theres the inconsiderate ones that talk even in places where there should be quiet.

Sorry, I have a lot of people to talk to, and a lot of business matters to deal with. Too bad they won't wait and neither will I. Normally I go grocery shopping and my phone rings at least 5 times. I never go through the checkout without someone yacking in my ear. What do you want me to do? Tell you guys to stop being insecure pricks that no one calls? Grow up. Hell, I ALWAYS turn my phone off in the move theatres and in class or the library. Now any other public place is pretty much fair game.

You do realize of course that that's why cellphone was invented in the first place, so you don't have to wait 'til you get home, for many people it's just not possible. What about pagers, are their users insecure asstards too?

lmao.. that's just stupid. So when you speak on a cellphone, it's all useless crap that can wait. But when you speak on a landline, it all just magically becomes more important?

Because I once dated a girl who used it to get me jealous. Every dude she'd flirt with constantly and they thought she wanted htem and she had them calling her everyday. You couldn't go out with her for more than 5 minutes without one of her boys calling her to just talk. I think she spent 3 hours on the phone a day or something. I wouldn't give her the gratification of knowing that it effected me though. The funny thing is every time my phone rang she had to know who it was. That and I can't stand people who talk on the phone while they drive and drive really really slow...

I want to know what people did before the cell phone became so ubiquitous. Business deals went on all the time without the phone ringing at the golf course, store check out lane, or while driving. I see people walk out the front door of their domicile and promptly pick up the cell phone and place a call as they are getting into their car. You just left your house and a phone you are paying for in there, if it was that important to call then, why not just call from inside of your house?

I have been almost run over by a woman chatting on her phone and not paying attention to her driving while I had the right of way in a clearly marked crosswalk. Please tell me that people on the phone are better drivers. Just a couple of years ago a 16 year old girl ran over a kid and killed him as he and his mother were out for a stroll. This happened in Gwinette county GA.

I personally don't care to be held up in the check out line while you chat and can't hear what the cashier is telling you as you are so absorbed your banal conversation on the phone. If you bring your car to me for work, stay off the phone so I can tell you what is wrong lest I go to work on one of the other cars that are in my bays needing to be fixed.

Cell phones have their place, but when they intrude on others space, it is rude and just plain inconsiderate. You affect more than just the one you are on the phone with even if you can't realize it.

I find it immensely disrespectful when someone I am hanging out with talks on their cell phone instead of, oh, I don't know, acting like I am there.

The only times that I have a problem with someone talking on a cell phone are the aforementioned "quiet places," and while driving. If you take time out of your conversation to interact with the clerk and not hold me up, then I don't even care if you're on the phone in a store/checkout line.

If you get pissed just seeing people talk on a cell phone in general, then get over it. They aren't going anywhere, and you're just causing yourself unnecessary stress by being upset at something that shouldn't have upset you in the first place. Yeah, the world got along without cell phones before the 80's, but it won't be doing that again anytime soon.
