I'm curious how you pronounce the word "hey" now.

OP, I'm not sure I understand your compleent.

I pronounce it the way virtually everyone else pronounces it. Thus, the spelling doesn't matter. If the OP is correct, too many people mispronounce San Pedro - so the spelling does matter.

So if I start saying hee instead of hey and enough people catch on, then I could use the A not E argument right?

Exactly. Language is fluid. It is not static. We no longer use "thou"; we switched to "you". We no longer use "art"; we now pronounce it "are". Thus, "Thou art" became "You are".

Words will change over time. If enough people switch pronounciations, we might as well (and occasionally do) switch spellings to reflect the change.

If people can't say Pedro properly, just switch it to Paydro. Problem solved.

San Pedro is a very famous town...It was also known as San Dimas in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure...

It's just a locals pronunciation...does it really bother you that bad?

Maybe the same reason people pronouce Carnegie as car-na-gee and not car-negg-ee, they don't know the right way to say it.

The real solution to this problem is for the crappy americanized mexican chain called "Pedro's" to propogate anywhere that they say pee-droh. No way could anyone still call it pee-droh's after hearing their annoying radio/tv ads. Except as a possible intentional mockery of their food.

Hey, maybe that's why they call it san pee-droh. Does it smell kind of like urine there?

Sweet I love scripts, been there plenty of times when I am in the area. When I am out there for a couple of months on business I stay near Vista or Oceanside, but usually Miramar, so I am always close.

Actually, I think San Dimas is in San Bernardino county...I could be wrong though, it's close anyway. You're right though. Two completely different towns and probably a good 30-40 miles apart.

I live in the SE, I thought it was pronounced San Paydro.

I've always wondered why New Yorkers call Houston street, "Howstan"?

Is there any known reason for this, or is everyone there just a moron?

Maybe you should take a poll on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills as to how people pronounce San Pedro?

Um, have you ever left your cave?

Go anywhere in LA and find someone who's actually left their house for more than 15 seconds and they're pronounce it PEE-droh.

And just in case some of you were wondering, 99.9% of the locals, be they white, hispanic, black, Asian or purple pronounce it PEE-droh. It's not a mispronunciation, it's just the way it's said. What I'm wondering is why. I mean yes, people mess up words in different languages -- the city of Vallejo California is constantly being called "Vah-LAY-joe", but never by anyone with a triple digit IQ.

EVERYONE calls San Pedro "San PEE-droh". And yes Mister MoronMan, even rich people.

I think you missed the joke (by a few million miles).

Think about this:

How do you pronounce the event where cowboys ride bucking horses and bulls?

How do you pronounce the famous drive in Beverly Hills with all the expensive shops?

BTW, I live in LA, so I know how people here pronounce San Pedro.

Take a chill pill.

Same reason why people pronounce my town Car-mel (Mel Gibson mel) instead of Carmel (camel with r) even if it is spelled Carmel (like the town in Cali).

Why do Mexicans call Jesus "Hey Zeus"?

Why fret over such things? Big deal, different cultures and languages pronounce things different ways... but for some reason, the English/American way is always wrong... no matter how much other languages butcher something.

a)Don't kid yourself
b)As if ENGLISH speakers can claim that a given letter should always be pronounced a certain way.

What the...I very rarely heard people mispronounce Spanish city names when I lived in California.

The one exception I can think of being Los Angeles...
