So much for the "upto 8x faster performance" due to the more efficient driver model, as if I ever believed it in the first place. If anything, MS will have to pay me to get me to switch, otherwise I'm keeping XP for as long as it serves my needs.

My experience is slightly different from Anandtech's review, networking in the real world I see no difference ,even in download speed testing,as to drivers well they will only get better with time and I find them adequate at the moment, yes they are missing a lot of the Nvidia Control panel features, memory with Vista is more efficient with superprefetch etc... but I agree 1GB is the minimum to aim for.

Game benchmarks well that's a whole new ball game, you can find both great and bad benchmark's for Vista performance, they'll improve with time ,you guys remember the video driver problems XP had in the early days with Nvidia ?.....I do ,not to mention XP stability/security before SP1 was released.

Give it time people remember this is a whole new OS,even Creative Labs still don't have any official drivers and I can confirm one major bug in the beta Audigy 4 drivers ,"CTHELP.EXE" causes memory crash error on restart or shutdown, fix for that is to disable it in startup of msconfig, not needed anyway.

There's really more Pro's then Con's,when I look at XP when it was first released and then you compare it to Vista,Vista is a more finished polished product for sure. The actual OS itself I find very stable.I've no intention of going back to XP,my experience has been very positive,I had more problem's with XP in the early days then I ever did with Vista at the moment.

My Vista problem's at the moment are minor lets see,hmm no Leadtek Vista x64 or x68 DTV tuner USB driver at the moment(however they have released some for other DTV models so I expect one soon),no official Creative drivers ( typical Creative but read due in March).Colorvision Spyder2Express has no usb driver at the moment for Vista(workround for that is to copy the Colorvison ICM settings you have from XP to a floppy or CD, then to Color management in Vista and install ColorVison software, the ICM settings will load on startup)....that's about it for my x64 Vista.

On a related note, I caught the "Wow" Vista commercial last night, I ended up saying Wow myself, when I saw the AMD logo attached to the end of it.

i have to point out that you said the *same thing* about Gothic 3 and NWN2.
--and they still aren't *fixed*

you seem to have at least twice the *patience* as most of us and a capacity for putting up with *irritations* that most of us cannot stand.

Hey guys

With the PC in my sig, would I be able to run Vista Business? My dad is a Microsoft Partner, and has got a Vista Business that can be installed on up to 5 PC's...
Was wondering whether I should bother with loading it or not

The 1GB of memory may not be ideal, but you should be alright.

apoppin: Please keep subject on topic, comparing games to Vista is different thing, where did I say Vista was perfect or everything is fixed?..Whatever I think of G3/NWN2 or what anybody else thinks of them is not related to Vista, you may disagree with my posts that's fine ,but that works both ways, not everybody agrees with you .

As to irritations, come on lets not be nieve here, with a new OS you expect some minor irritations.Life is one big irritation in one way or another .

i am keeping it *on topic*

i want people to know that you are *extraordinarily patient* ... way more than *most* of us ... so they know "where you are coming from" ... your PoV

you are way *more forgiving* of issues than are most of us [period]

i have followed your post in Games for a long time and i DO respect your opinion ... but now i know what 'kind' of person you are ... and i am not patient

I get the impression your standards are sometimes way too high, don't get me wrong that's ok, but nowadays in the real world you have to expect a more releastic standard especially with Microsoft .

I wonder if there is an OS or game that is apoppin perfect ,now that is expecting too much <------joke.

Cool, thanks

If worst comes to worst, I can always just reload XP I guess

1GB is the minimum I would go with Vista, a readyboost USB flash drive added to Vista can help too.

I just got a great idea for a Windows Vista commercial.

You got a kid sitting in his room playing his favorite game. Although, said kid is not fairing too well. He's getting his butt handed to him... on a fricken' silver platter for God's sake. "GAME OVER" appears across his screen and in pure distraught, he flails down on top of his desk.. saddened at his computer's lack of performance to play his favorite game. He looks up slowly from his hunched position and sees the HOLY GRAIL OF COMPUTING lying in front of him! The ultimate unbranded 1GB flash memory stick!

The kid realizes quickly what he must do... he plugs the 1GB flash memory stick (with something written on it like "Final Report", add in a little funny) and all of a sudden you see major pwnage. Then at the end, "YOU WIN" pops up on his screen and it focuses in on that. Then, some wording comes in from behind that says "with Vista!"

What do you guys think? I should make that and put it on YouTube, maybe I'll win some fan-made commercial contest like the Doritos thing, but for Windows.

I was surprised at the DX9 gaming performance under vista.
It was the same if not just a tad faster then XP.

I have to do a clean install soon and I might make the move to Vista then
Back up time....

most people game on consoles. so the gaming advantage is negated. online gaming you at the mercy of the internet connection and network load ie number of players and their system performance.

Where is the poll results that show that most people game on consoles? You really can't just come out and say something like this without backup. And I'd be satisfied if just the members of AT were included in any such claim. In here, most of us game on PC's. Sure, a lot of us have a console or two, but that doesn't mean they don't game on the PC either.

Not here they don't. At least that's the general vibe I get.

Point is, Vista is new and normally people like to see noticeable improvements with new things. That just doesn't happen with fresh OS's. The differences take a little time to surface, and as the product matures they will be seen. That's what real "future-proofing" is all about, buying more for tomorrow, not for today.

I guess all the reviews I've seen showing Vista significantly slower in games are just wrong. Thanks. Installing now.. not.

I have just installed UT2004 and Morrowind with a few other games for my Vista x64,to be honest they don't feel any slower in game,so I'm happy Vista gamer .

I just wish Creative Labs would hurry up with some official sound card drivers(ETA is March I hear).

I doubt I'm going to upgrade to Vista until my next full system upgrade. Considering that any games that require DirectX 10 (with the exception of Halo 2) aren't going to be released for at least another year and that I won't have a DX10 card for a while after that anyway, I don't see the point. Plus, I was still using Windows 98 until 2004 on a Pentium II 450 with 128 megs of RAM, later upgraded to 256. I don't know why I put up with it for so long, probably because XP runs like crap with that little memory, I guess. Anyway, If I can keep using 98 for that long, I can handle holding off on Vista. Especially since XP is easily an order of magnitude better than 98 was.

The only reason I moved from Win98 was the security holes in it. My appraisal software finally upgraded from 16 bit to 32 bit in 2004 and I don't see them upgrading any time soon. If my sons junior high school makes the move to Vista, then I will bump his machine up to 2GB and take the plunge, but again I don't see that happening unless Gates or someone gives our school district 1000+ new PCs with Vista
