Opera was once my favorite and best browser. But the pc version became an abomination. And now it seems the mobile version for android is also horrible. Before opera updated itself yesterday evening, i was able to use the old flash player to watch my favorite detective series online on my tablet. But yesterday Opera for android updated itself and lo' and behold, the websites mentioned that i needed a flash player for it to work. I checked, and i had my flashplayer installed but this new opera refuses the adobe flashplayer.

I tried to reinstall a new version of the flashplayer but i noticed that adobe pulled flashplayer from google store. Why ?

So i installed an archived version from the adobe site that was a bit newer than the one i had installed but... To no prevail. Using Opera means, no longer watching any flash player based video content. The websites can no longer "recognize" since this last update of opera that i have a flash player installed.

Felling very sad, i tried the only thing i could do.
I tried it with google chrome and although it is a lot slower in loading, it works.

Oh the horror... How bad Opera has become...

Flash 11.1 was the last official version. After that, Adobe stopped releasing it for mobile to focus on HTML 5 and Adobe AIR development. According to Wikipedia, Ice Cream Sandwich was the last Android distro to officially support it.

That's certainly not a bad thing. Flash is well known to be a resource hog. It also has several glaring security issues. Since iOS never supported it, most mobile video sites switched over to HTML 5 ages ago.

And yes, Opera has been crap for a long time now. There's plenty of decent alternatives like Chrome, Firefox, Dolphin, and Mercury.

It's a public service. They're reacting to the criticism of anti-consumer practices. Now if they'll only quit distributing the bloatware Reader, that does far more than anything for pdfs should do...

I use Firefox

You can get lightweight PDF viewer if you want, but Acrobat Reader is actually pretty nice, and I even have Acrobat Pro. I might be wrong but Reader might be a touch bit faster, so I leave it as the default.

Windows 8 even has a very lightweight PDF viewer.

If you have to sign PDFs or do some other light markup, Acrobat Reader becomes quite helpful. Perhaps other utilities have that and have a lighter footprint? Not sure.

Foxit reader can although they use some 3rd party for digital signatures. I feel like it's kinda slowed down some compared to how it used to be though. It's more like OpenOffice, it's not so much a lightweight program, but it's not too bad and as a free open source alternative it's pretty decent.

I think Firefox added PDF support as I don't think I use the Foxit plug-in there anymore, but might (I think you can have it install plug-ins when you install Foxit, think you can install just the plug-ins too if you don't want the installed version).

That's abuse of pdfs. You wouldn't annotate, or edit a hardcover book I gave you, so why should you do that to a pdf? A pdf should be a static presentation of data. If someone wants to change it, they should get the source, and use appropriate tools.

Equating a book and a PDF is absurd.

Editable PDFs and ones that can be signed/verified with digital certificates are becoming the standard for digital documents (thankfully, because Lotus Forms blows, hard).

It's rare to use markup tools on PDF, but highlighting can be useful, and blacking out before printing is also very useful. You could also lock them after editing, but I don't know the security of that.

Yea, a book won't pwn you with embedded code. pdfs have turned into a proprietary playground where everything inappropriate gets crammed into something that's supposed to be a finished product; like a book...

It looks like you're getting way too worked up over a document format.

pdf forms have existed for years, as has digital signing. It's a heck of a lot cleaner to give a pdf form than it is a word document.

When I make documents to send to people, I send them as PDFs. I'm pretty much the only one who uses LibreOffice in my area, and I can't count on the produced .doc files it produces to be formatted correctly when viewed from MS Word.

The opposite reason is why I prefer to send PDF files, unless it is specifically meant to be thoroughly edited and expanded and whatnot. If it meant to be a fully living document, I'll send in a Word doc. If it's meant to be most or fully finished, it's PDF for me. I fear that if I send in Word, that others won't be using Word. They may be using OpenOffice or LibreOffice, or they may be uses Pages in the iWork suite. All three will not give the same formatting for many documents made in Word, they often ruin most of my documents when I compare.

If it's a form or should be signed, PDF is where it is at, no other document version is nearly as good for that, it is basically 100% compatible.

Yes, Firefox added support about a year ago. Its only good for basic viewing, and even that is limited. Most of the time it sucks and screws things up so I always default it to open PDFs in reader.

How can adobe pull flashplayer for android and at their own site claim that if you want to use flash, use a desktop or something. There are way too many websites using flash. And the google flashplayer is not as good. Before the video start, i get a commercial which is interactive. With google flashplayer, the commercial hangs forever and the video does not start. I think this shows once again that adobe is a bunch of crazy people. There must be more going on.

And i agree that pdfs should be static documents. The only editting allowed should be to add bookmarks with remarks.

Well, as I said, Flash isn't very common on mobile and tablet websites. Apple has never supported it on iOS, so people stopped using it. Which is actually a huge benefit for Android users as well. Flash is utter garbage and a vector for malware.

I have not been watching a mobile site or tablet website, that is the issue. It is a normal site and it used to work fine on my tablet and even on my mobile phone when opera was set as desktop agent. Until adobe issued an update. I thought it was Opera mobile but it seems that just before Opera mobile got updated, the flash player was updated. What i also find strange is that before the flash update i could acces the flash settings, after the update not anymore. Flashplayer refuses everything. I find this a very foul move of adobe. Instead of just ending support and keep the last released version of flash player running, adobe disabled flash. Leaving consumers watching regular sites on their tablet in the cold. I understand that html 5 is the future but this is a very foul move.

Well, nothing is stopping you from using .PDF like it is intended.
