Look at it this way. No serious person reads three lines who is genuinely interested in content and concludes that nothing is there. One mentions that one reads only three lines to and mentions that fact only to dismiss and denigrate the person intended. One does this, of course, because one is small minded and nasty, because one feels ones ego is being attacked. And one always feels ones ego is being attacked when somebody like me tells them of this fact, either by saying it directly, as I do by calling them defective, which they certainly are, or by describing how their ego works, which I certainly did.

I'll be honest, MB, I'm not sure I understand your point, so perhaps I'm off on a tangent. That said, I think the basic flaw in your premise is that it presumes gun supporters are all conservatives and gun opponents are all liberals. Yet we've seen in the many threads here that this gun support does not divide along such ideological lines. I'd also say while fear certainly drives many people in both camps, it is not the only factor, and I question whether it's even the primary driver.
For many gun rights supporters (myself included), the issues are the recognition that guns are a tool with many legitimate uses (both defensive and recreational), and that ownership is a right enshrined in our Constitution. We also recognize that the most visible anti-gun advocacy is empty theater. For example, fixating on cosmetic features (e.g., "assault" weapons) is pandering to ignorance, especially given that such weapons represent a miniscule fraction of all gun violence. Pragmatically, we also recognize that the genie is out of the bottle. It may well be America would be a better place if we had no guns ... but it would also be swell if we could all grow pots of gold in our unicorn gardens. It just isn't going to happen. Ever.
Conversely, gun opponents aren't necessarily fearful of guns. Instead, they objectively recognize that guns are the most efficient way of killing people, and they are used to kill thousands of Americans each year. It makes sense for anyone who values human life to want to eliminate a major factor in deaths. That's logic, not fear. Though I don't think their methods are effective, I do understand the concern and the feeling that doing something, even if it only saves a handful of lives, is better than doing nothing at all.
The position you stake out here is identical to what I also think. I am a gun owner. If I tried to mentally count how many I would probably miss some. I have also made these points myself on many occasions.
I understand that fear isn't the only thing that drives the will to own guns or to want them banned. The only point of this thread was to state that in my opinion the reason the gun issue exists so powerfully in our culture today, why I called my thread a need for another gun thread of which there are so many, is because the issue of gun ownership and the psychotic fear that guns will be taken away, a point you and I both see as an impossibility, is constantly fueled and flamed by folk who benefit from fanning those flames. It is the folk who buy those guns out of irrationally induced terrors created by the right wing bubble machine, for financial and political reasons, that are being fleeced. They are fed and fattened and slaughtered by cunning manipulative people, and all the while strutting around pounding the ground and proclaiming how save they are.
It is the inner insecurity of folk who feel inferior that allows them to be played, their hubris that blinds them to it. They are stuffed so full of pride they are mentally immobilized. Nothing but a deflation of their demented egos can save them.
They demonize everybody around them and they do the same to me. So I return the favor. All the pitiful crying for reason and logic, from the left and from the right, fails totally to reach them. They hide behind false pride and it makes them ridiculous. So I point that out. I treat them just like they treat others. They run others down to maintain the comfort of their ego state. They are bullies but I know what they feel and what they are hiding from. I know how to reduce them to pudding.

I believe that if the left will not stand up to the right and call them on what they are they will continue to destroy team America in favor of team brain defective. I believe it to be an ancient wisdom that the way to deal with bullies is to kick them in the nuts.
