Why? Why so high of FPS?

Ok I know higher FPS is always better, so it doesnt bog the computer as much. But I mean, I am kind of lost with these new video cards. And confused at to way people would pay $350.00-$400.00 on saw a Geforce3 the day it came out, just so they can get a higher FPS and get all these image features that they cant even use. I mean I get 80FPS on a constant at 1280x1024, and my games run silky smooth. I only spent $80.00 on my card. So why would I want to go about and spend $400.00 on a card that is going to play the game the exact same way? Sure the FPS will be higher, but I wont be able to tell, it is not going to increase my Frags. And maybe the image quality might be a little better, but it is not going to increase my Frags. Sure the card might have all these new features and make games look more real, but for one no games use the technology yet, and who is to say they will, and again it is not going to increase my frags I mean I can understand getting a new video card all the time if the one you are on is making the games unplayable. But when was the last time a New BadAss gaming graphics engine came out? CSTrike is still one of the most popular games around, and it is on the Halflife Engine. Serious Sam is the Halflife engine too. UT was a nice engine but nothing shocking. Q3 Nice but nothing to make me want to go out and spend $400.00 on a video card. So please explain to me why some people go out and buy these very expensive cards? Just to replace it again in 6months or sooner?

Some people want the latest and greatest. It's an addiction and Nvidia knows it and keeps feeding us those boards! If there wasn't a market for the high end boards they wouldn't produce them.

Basically there is no good reason to buy a GF3 today... but I will comment that there ARE games out there TODAY that can benefit from the extra horsepower. Try running MW4 on your rig at 1024X768 with all the details turned on. More than likely you will choke it, and that's a game that has been in development for almost 2 years.

Games WILL be out this fall that will convince people to upgrade to GF3 or Radeon 2. That doesn't mean you can't get perfectly good performance from a sub $100 board. As to graphics features... they do look good and thats why I buy games to have nice looking graphics (and of course gameplay).

Also GF3 has better 2d image quality which matters to those of us running high res on 19" or bigger monitors.

Newer games come out everyday that require more and more from a PC.
I'm sure there are many, but try Nascar Racing 4.
Even with a 1GHz AMD and GF2 GTS, at 1024x768x16, the fps drops into the 20's with all cars on track, and detail cranked up, "without" even using FSAA. But, many of the games like this one, may get more of a performance boost for the dollar by increasing CPU speed instead of video, now that CPU's are so cheap.

So i only paid $40 for my video card and it runs q3 @1024x768 just fine.
Why would you buy a video card for $80?? You won't get any more frags than I would and i'll be just as happy.
/end sarcasm
To ask the question "why?" is stupid. Why do people but sports cars? They certainly can't do 100+mph on city streets. Why do people buy suv's? most don't go off road. Do you really need a 1ghz athlon with 512mb of ram to browse the internet? NO
It's the psychological effect that "more is better" that causes people to buy expensive items.
Get the point?
/me thinks you don't.

I didn't realize people were still butting sport cars. Would that be for a Miller light?

Well, spending 400 dolllars may be a bit overkill, but it's just more for the future and ur hoping u wont have to upgrade so quickly. And also, u can run current games nice and fast I love my games smooth, slide shows have it's place, but not when i'm kicking someone's @$$! Lol, just my 2cents

I do not understand what You are talking about. Something must be wrong with Your drivers or so.
I have a Voodoo5 and even on this grandma at 800x600 everything maxed I can run even 4x FSAA without any problems whatsoever (do not know the FPS, but it does not matter because it is silk smooth).
I think MW4 is not a demanding game at all.

people are very wrong when they want more FPS !!!
they need better minimum fps...
in that way they will never see a slide show...

some might say but if the card can achieve better higher fps then it will get better minimum fps!!!
wrong cause there are different aproaches to 3d (Kyro 2) that can give better minimum fps even with (sometimes kyro 2 gives better average and maximum also) lower average and maximum fps ...

Actually Serious Sam uses it's own propietory engine, not the HL engine. Some people just like to have the fastest, shiniest objects.

ermmm...serious sam was built from scrath from croteam...it's called the "serious engine" hl don't support a lot of things that the serious engine can do (like different blending modes...fog types..texture compression..etc...) and it certainly can't render those huge environments that great...anyways...about the gf3...some people want the latest and greatest...and they want their games super fast and they want to be able to play games in 1600x1280 (or something like that) or 1284x1024 (or something like that...again) in 2x fsaa...personally I don't think it's worth to buy a video card for $350 when all it does is get more frames even though a $100 (or less) video card can do the same things...but just not at that high of a res or get as many fps....but I wouldn't care if I get 80 fps in quake 3 and then someone else gets 150 or something...

It's quite simple. Tribes 2. I'm getting 40ish FPS with a GF2 Pro and a duron@825 with settings around medium, res 1024x768

Really? I was unaware that Serious Sam was its own engine that looks almost exactly like HalfLife. lol. Who cares if it is its own engine, its nothing NEW or Special. Sure it might compress textures differntly and etc...,. But it doesnt really look a whole lot better. Its not a Leap by anymeans in the Graphic World.

I have a Posche and I have a Geforce3, doesn't they both sound great. Some people like to have the best money can buy to do what I don't know, maybe - futureproof, tons of DX8 features unusable now, better 2D, or even suffer from a medical syndrome that unable to stand seeing the GF3 on the shelf alone(just kidding). Whatever that reason is who care, if you want one go get one.

i don't know what settings you play on, or whether you need glasses, but serious sam looks ONE HELL of a lot better than half-life. its engine is quite impressive, doing some light effects and wide open areas alot better than, say, quake III.

I feel the same way about my current TNT2, it still has playable frame rates in UT but I would think image quality would be better with a new vid card. Get this, my mobo and 700 mhz classic athlon fried so I spent my vid card money on an new mobo and 1.2ghz t-bird, looks like I am stuck with this tnt2 for anaother 6 months

you think spending 400 bucks on videocard is an overkill?

you should've seen what some "audiophilles" spend their money on equipment.

check the link below.

clink here

that's right. that's basically fancier-looking powercord that does a job no better than one you

can buy at the radioshack for 2 bucks max...(don't argue with me about this price...i don't actually know how much a powercord costs at radioshack =)

my point is... some people spend their money however they want...

not all of us want gf3...but that doesn't mean that all of us should settle with 80 bucks

videocard you got...

Theres a few reasons for a faster graphics card:

1) This is a big one, not just for vid cards. Back in the day coders were constricted to limits of the computer. They had to make the code work with the computer or they weren't going to sell anything. Also back then people understood the mechanics of computers more. Actually its more like the only people that used a computer were people that knew this. Anyway, everyone knows and its commonly stated, even a bit nievely by comp illiterate people that by the time you've got your new computer home from the store its obsololete. Ok without getting into a full blown report here i better cut to the chase, coders are sloppier and know that they can make a game that needs alota hardware because they know people are buying it. they get away with it.

2) Someone else mentioned this; minimum fps. This is what we're going for these days, the way things are and should be headed for the next little while. Yes you can't actually see the difference between 80fps and 81+fps but you can see the change from 200fps to 100fps. Thats what your eye sees... so what you want is to be able to get 200fps most of the time and then set the game to only ever display 100fps, so that when you get in those huge outdoor areas where your fps would drop from 200 to 100, it doesn't drop because its already at 100 and you dont notice a thing.

3) is the psychological factor most people recognize. you know, money is money, it comes and goes and its more fun to spend it than save. or at least save and then spend alot of it. what else is it good for? prestige of having the latest things is always a factor too, especially when you're submerged in a community like this one!

4) i forget, since i stopped and talked to someone during writing this but i think i had a 4th. anyway most probably stopped reading by now, i would of.

oh and about s. sam and this: "Who cares if it is its own engine, its nothing NEW or Special" i say pfft to you

the uh "point" of S. Sam was not to do "something new" but to do "something old" which is, bring back the DOOM style gameplay. im sorry, but i STILL get a rush out of being too close to a spawn point when 5 of those charging bulls come out, along with 10 mad bomber men, and 4 of those fast skeleton-truck things.

most other games dont have that anymore, S.S. does.

its simple, but fun.

did i mention it was $19.99?
