Why would you make a more powerful card with fewer Texture units?

first off stop looking at that site. they just take a mish mash of stuff and half ass put it together. there are MANY inaccuracies on that site and it does not make for good comparisons sometimes.

next why does it matter if it has fewer texture units? what matters is the actual performance for its given price point.

What does it matter if the 460 has more TMU's than the 750? if it cant do anything better than a 750 that has less TMU's.

I think what you mean is why didnt nvidia make a 750 with more TMUs?

Theres probably a engineering reason behinde it, and if you look at the perf/watt of the 750 its amasing.. I doubt nvidia fumbled the ball on that card.

The card has as many TMUs as it needs, because if it needed more, nvidia would have given it that.

Ei. there are smart people that design these cards, there are probably drawbacks that would be had if they designed it another way than it is today.

You can't make that comparison though. The designs of the TMUs, the shaders and the ROPs have completely changed between the 460 (Fermi) and the 750 Ti (Maxwell). You can only really compare "unit counts" between different chips which use the same architecture - for example comparing the shader count between a GTX 460 and a 480 makes sense.

A good example of this, is that the shaders went from being double core clock speed to the same as core clock speed between Fermi and Kepler. As a result, GPUs of similar performance suddenly had twice as high a shader count despite not having the power, performance or transistor budgets for those increasing correspondingly.

I believe that similarly, different TMUs over different generations have been able to map a different number of textures per clock, although I don't know the hard data difference between Fermi and Maxwell. In bench, the GTX 750 Ti and GTX 480 are about equal, so clearly the 750 Ti crushes the 460 in fill rate.

Not even that, 460 and 480 were different, the smaller chip was super-scalar to a degree.

You can't compare like for like here, it is like saying a Pentium 4 3.8Ghz should be quicker than a 2.4ghz Core 2 duo, because it has more 'Gigahertz'.

Or that a 2.0 Ford is more powerful than a 1.8 Toyota, when one may have 130bhp and the other 190bhp.
