We need to clarify a few things. Canon never made a EF 55mm prime but they did make a 18-55, a 17-55, and a 50 which you cannot put a wide angle adapter too. They where only meant to be used in that focal range. I don't believe Canon has ever made a wide angle adapter for any EF lens similar to their point and shoot line. However, you can purchase a Sigma 10-22 or a Canon 10-22 which produce AMAZING results. The canon will run you about 700 after shipping and the sigma will be about 150 dollars cheaper. In the used market they range from 525-650. Some reviews put the sigma over the canon but if you can buy the Canon get it. Otherwise for the money the Sigma is the way to go and many photographers can't justify the extra 150 dollars.

I don't think he said anything about EF. Canon did make a Canon FD 55mm 1.2 that can be modded to FD EOS mount adaptor thought.

You are right Canon did make an FD 55mm. But I assume since he bought an XTi, the Op is using EF mount glass. I also thought that canon only had an adapter for their telephotos and the third party stuff either did not list compatibility or where cheap and not worth it optically. I could only imagine adding another adapter would produce horrible results.

I remember reading that you could mod the 55mm to EOS mount. But someone who would do that over buying a 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 these days, especially in digital photography would most likely not be asking about wide angle adapters.

if the lens you are referring to is the one that came with the xti, it's already got a wide angle end. just zoom out. if you want more, you can get a wide angle filter/conversion lens that screws into the front. they're common on ebay. not the highest quality solution, however.

a much higher quality solution is a new lens. that is a lot more expensive, however.

And, the normal lens type that comes with the XTi is EF-S. EF and EFS lenses are not designed for "adapters." The electronic exposure settings would not work correctly. The whole point of DSLRs is to be able to change lenses to suit the job at hand.

There are currently 3 EF-S lenses available:

18-55mm (The standard "kit" lens)
17-85mm A better lens
10-22mm An awesome wide angle zoom.

The XTi will also accept all Canon EF lenses and be fully functional in all modes electronically.

There's also the 17-55 2.8IS.

And a couple upcoming ones from canon, an IS version of the kit lens and a 50-250 IS.

Don't forget there are 3rd party EF-S mounts too.. tamron 17-50 2.8, Sigma 18-50 2.8, sigma 30 1.4... etc ,etc

I think he may be thinking about one of these:

Text

If that is the case... you will be wasting your money. For $40 something what kind of optics would you expect?
