Widescreen gaming rocks

I picked up this monitor:

Went from a 17"crt with a max resolution of 1024x768 to that above at 1440x900.

All the games I play have a widescreen option so far.. and all I have to say is
WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!

By the way.. this monitor is amazing.. no dead pixels, incredible clarity. Though going from CRT to lcd takes a little getting use to as you can kinda see the grains a bit in some games.

Have fun. The 19in WS monitors are a really nice deal if your looking for a good relatively inexpensive monitor.

The 19" WS have a large dot pitch so slightly grainer compared to the 20" WS and other WS.

There are lot of new games and even old games that you can run in WS mode,(I even got Morrowind to run in WS mode).

I would say WS resolution is already here,nothing EA can do about that.

Yes, WS gaming rocks. Been doing it for several years now, no way I would ever go back. Its a shame some devs are still too lazy, or ignorant to put a tre WS res in games.

No disrespect to you and your 2001FP, but WS gaming is actually the present. It only appears to be the future for EA and other companies out of touch with what their customers want...

See, something most people seem to be blind to is the fact that most online multiplayer fps games do not actually support widescreen, regardless of what the resolution is set to.

So then you get a lovely stretched distorted picture, no bigger or better than if you weren't running WS...

I heard so much hype about WS before i got my WS display, & now that i have one, i can say that WS gaming isn't all that.

Unless you happen to be lucky enough to be playing games that actually support WS.

You're limiting the scope to online FPS games. Your point is valid within that scope, but there are many more genres out there.

Hmm Quake 4,FEAR,UT2004,TFC,CS ,DoD etc....... don't know what games you play ,but all my online games support WS,those that don't are far less compared to those that do.

As for BF2 there is a way round that to support WS mode ie....

Last time i played Q4, all WS gave me was a stretched version of 4:3.
Yes, i realize the menu has 16:10 & 16:9 options, but have you not noticed all that does is stretch the picture?

As for UT2k4, it doesn't run WS properly at all.
You can set the resolution to WS, but it merely stretches the normal 4:3 image.

So as an example, playing @ 1600x1200 is exactly the same viewing area as 1920x1200 :frown:

Of course, the argument is it would be unfair to give WS gamers an advantage in having more viewing area...so basically, instead, you get a distorted image.

I'll have to install FEAR to check it again.
Also have to install CS:S to check it later.

I don't have BF or DOD.

Online FPS includes a HUGE percentage of gamers. When you say "limiting", you underestimate how large a percentage you are talking about. I super rarely play anything but FPS's. CoD/2, FarCry, Painkiller are installed in my box right now. While I seldom play the latter 2 online, I only play CoD/2 in multiplayer.

Looks fine to me at 1680x1050 res.Btw I even got Morrowind to run in native WS 1680x1050 mode,not to meantion all the RPG games that have native WS support.

I think the current state of wide screen gaming could be better called "cropped" screen gaming. Most games implement 16:10 pictures by cropping the top and bottom of the screen off, so you actually see less than on a 4:3 monitor.

I fully support games having the option to run native widescreen and normal (my gaming notebook for lan parties has a WS display). I just do not believe that games will be dropping support for standard 1024x768 / 1600x1200 type aspect ratios at any point in the foreseeable future.
