Widescreen Woes

I'm having some headaches getting the Wii to output widescreen mode to my TV, but first, here's all the equipment in question.

TV: Sharp AQUOS 37" LC37D62U
A/V Receiver: Yamaha RX-757 (discontinued, apparently)
A/V Components: Charter HD DVR, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox360, Sony Playstation 2

Cable hookups are as follows:

I have the Wii set to 480p output (TV confirms the handshake), but every time I toggle the widescreen to 16:9 format instead of 4:3, the picture goes anamorphic instead of widening. I thought it might be the receiver, but the Xbox360 handshakes and the TV confirms a 1080p signal. I could tell the TV to stretch the picture, but if the hardware will do that for me all the while giving me more screen real estate, I figure why settle for less?

Is there something I'm missing, perhaps?

Not all Wii games are 16:9, or 480p. Also some have underscan such as Metroid Prime 3. The Wii will not change the widescreen settings, so you will have to use your TVs "Full" setting for 16:9, and "Normal" for 4:3 if you don't want to stretch the 4:3 games.

The Wii doesn't send a "flag" telling the TV to output in 16:9. You have to set the TV to stretch the image. Not sure about the Sharp display you have, but my Toshiba Regza will automatically stretch the image when it detects a 4:3 signal (in other words, it remembers the display setting I specified for 4:3 input).

yep, i get the same problem with my wii, Pioneer Elite VSX 91, and Westinghouse 47w1. Only happens when it goes through the Elite though...still trying to wade through some forums and such, havent really found a great fix :\

So let me see if I understand this: the Wii only outputs in anamorphic widescreen, leaving the monitor to handle the hardware stretch?

thats kinda the conclusion i came to. at first i thought it was a problem with my elite, but it seems that its just a weird wii thing...


hopefully they can fix that in a patch or something.. pretty lame to have to do that.

I have an LC32GP1U (virtually the same tv) and I have to set the TV to stretch when playing 16:9 and set to side-bars when playing 4:3 (Game Cube games).
